BY PATRICK KERKSTRA INQUIRER STAFF WRITER Before the next mayor’s first term ends, $1 of every $4 Philadelphia spends will go to city workers’ pensions and health benefits. Unless the city gets a handle on these costs — which have more than doubled in Mayor Street’s tenure — the next mayor will have little or no cash left for new initiatives. Alone among big U.S. cities, Philadelphia has committed itself to substantive, long-term tax cuts. The reductions may be essential if the city is to scale down its notorious tax burden and compete for commerce, but that does not erase […]
Hold The Phone! SAM KATZ Switches From GOP To Indie, Opening Door To Possible 2007 Mayoral Run
MARICA GELBERT OF THE INQUIRER After weeks of blogging about the Philadelphia mayor’s race, Sam Katz has taken a step toward jumping into it, The Inquirer has learned. The three-time mayoral candidate has left the door open for a fourth run, quietly switching his party registration at the eleventh hour last week from Republican to independent. In an interview this afternoon, Katz repeatedly declined to say whether he was considering a run. But he also did not rule it out, saying only: “It is what it is. I wouldn’t read too much into it.” The pre-primary deadline for voter registration […]
HIZZONER ’07: The Gloves Are Officially Off
“There are four candidates sitting at this table that all their life helped working men and women,” Brady said. “There is one candidate, Tom Knox, that has not. [He’s been] ripping off men and women, working men and women . . . Predatory lending, insurance scams, attacking pensions. Now, I’m going to get a lot of negative ads coming back to me, probably a million dollars negative on me. But . . . my vision is too important for this city to have Tom Knox become the mayor.” It was a calculated attack. As the candidates left the television studio, […]
INGRATITUDE: NOLA Mayor Literally Trashes Philly
PHILADELPHIA — New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin criticized the cleanliness of Philadelphia after a visit to the city last week. “Let me tell you something. You ought to go to Philly and you will appreciate how clean New Orleans is,” Nagin said Saturday to a crowd of New Orleans residents concerned about the city’s recovery from Hurricane Katrina. “Just go and walk around Philly a little bit and you will appreciate,” Nagin said. ” … We still have some work to do but we definitely beat them by a long shot.” Nagin struck a different tone when he was in […]

Drudge Pimping Smerconish As Imus Replacement
This has Smerconish’s fingerprints all over it: A semi-blind item on Drudge with NOTHING to substantiate it but a link to the WPHT site, where there is NO mention of the Imus tryout. Thank god the Supreme Court legalized sodomy, because otherwise all the mutual analingus that goes on in the right-wing echo chamber could land these guys in the pokey. Either way, it would appear we called it first: Does the Inquirer pay you by the word? Because if I was your editor I would tell you that re-printing your resume is NOT […]
THIS JUST IN: Howard Dean Campagin Architect & Current Tom Knox Political Guru JOE TRIPPI Signs On To Edwards Campaign
Obviously somebody feels his work here in Philadelphia is almost done. Here’s the complete text of Joe Trippi’s announcement: I really thought that the 2004 presidential campaign would be the last I would be involved in. I have always wanted to make a difference, but for me I thought those days were over. A few weeks ago, John and Elizabeth Edwards made their decision to continue, not just John Edwards’ campaign for President, but their work together to make a difference for their country. And that made me realize that I wasn’t done trying to make a difference either. Not […]
VIET NOW: Today’s Death Toll In Baghdad = SIX Virginia Tech Massacres — Just Sayin’
BAGHDAD — Four large bombs exploded in mostly Shiite areas of Baghdad on Wednesday, killing at least 178 people and wounding scores — the deadliest day in the city since the start of the U.S.-Iraqi campaign to pacify the capital two months ago. [Note: Video footage has been sanitized for the protection of your peace of mind]
THE MICHAEL SMERCONISH EXPLAINER: Wiping The Smirk Off Mr. Clean With The Dirty Rag Of Truth
BY JONATHAN VALANIA Michael Smerconish looks just like Mr. Clean, or, as he is known to Russian housewives, Mr. Proper. Michael Smerconish is also a country club Republican, a talk-radio host and, as of late, a regular fixture of the Inquirer’s Sunday Op-Ed page. Bully for him, we’re all for equal time and open debate even if we think he has his shiny head up his ass most of the time. Sadly, because of guys like Smerconish — Machiavellian media climbers that will say ANYTHING to ensure their butt space in the game of musical chairs that is the talking […]
HIZZONER ’07: Ferrick Has It Down To Knox Vs. Fattah = Mayor Fattah
The Democratic campaign for mayor is now a race between two candidates: Chaka Fattah and Tom Knox. We predict one of these guys is going to win the May 15 Democratic primary, which means one of these guys is going to be the next mayor. That’s not to say the three other candidates – Bob Brady, Michael Nutter and Dwight Evans – are irrelevant. Indeed, they are tres relevant, but mostly in their effect on the top two candidates. HIZZONER ’07: Judge Says Brady Stays On The Ballot, Blames Vague Filing Instructions That, Curiously, No Other Candidate Had Difficulty Following
Yesterday, rather than pointing a finger of blame at Brady, Commonwealth Court blamed the state Ethics Commission, arguing that it produced a flawed set of instructions. In the opinion, Pellegrini acknowledged that pension contributions are the type of “thing of value” that ought to be reported under theĀ Ethics Act. But he said the instructions got in the way by limiting “what is to be included in income.” The judge noted that cases such as this, in which the issue is exactly what must be disclosed by a candidate, are becoming increasingly common. He asked for someone — presumably the Supreme […]
