HOT DOC: How To Restore The Fourth Amendment

Tell Harry Reid: No Immunity for Lawbreaking Companies The Senate is considering a bill that would grant immunity to any telecom company that assisted in the administration’s illegal wiretapping. Chris Dodd promised to put a hold on any such bill, and Joe Biden and Barack Obama pledged to uphold it. We believe that any bill coming before the Senate that includes provisions for so-called ‘amnesty’ for large companies involved in illegally spying on Americans should be opposed, and have authored a letter to this effect addressed to Majority Leader Reid. You can co-sign it below. The letter will also be […]

Handwashing Incident Mars Grand Opening Of Comcast Doyenne’s Private Theater “You’re the third person who said they built this place,” said Nathan Lane to developer Carl Dranoff Monday night at the opening of the Suzanne Roberts Theatre in the Symphony House (Broad & Pine), which Dranoff Properties did build. Lane was among actors performing “An Evening with Terrence McNally and Friends,” which included a stunning Edie Falco; Richard Thomas, Lucie Arnaz and Doris Roberts, and more actors performing scenes from McNally plays with accompaniment from theatrical musician and “Rosie” show bandleader John McDaniel. A humble McNally addressed the patrons who […]

WORTH REPEATING: The Ashes Of American Flags

BILL MAHER: Show me a man wearing an American flag pin in his lapel, and I’ll show you an asshole. I’m sure there are exceptions, but in general people need to remember that lapels aren’t for wearing pins to create the illusion that you’re supporting the troops. They’re for wearing ribbons to create the illusion that you’re helping cure a disease. Last week we had the first genuine controversy of the presidential campaign: the shocking news that Barack Obama doesn’t wear an American flag lapel pin, so apparently he and America are no longer going steady. “No lapel pin, Senator? […]

Mr. Handler plays accordion on the new Magnetic Fields album, Distortion, due out in January. He will be touring with the band on the West Coast. 3. Mr. Handler only bothered to learn to play the accordion so he could pick up chicks. “When I was coming up it was during that brief time in rock history when no keyboard whatsoever was cool, and that’s the only instrument I played. I really, really wanted to be in a band, […]

It’s called Integrity: Good People, Bad Choices, and Life Lessons from the White House. RADIO TIMES Hour 1 Is Barack Obama a symbol of a new generation of black leaders? We’ll talk about […]

FBI Reverses Policy, Allows Dopers To Become G-Men

The FBI recently announced it is changing its policy of not hiring people with a history of marijuana or other illegal drug use because the policy disqualifies so many people the agency cannot fill needed positions. Asking job applicants about past drug use during polygraph tests was “tripping people up” said Mark S. Zaid, a defense lawyer who works on FBI employment disputes. According to Zaid, in an interview in the August 7, Washington Post, the FBI realized that their drug policy was causing them to “lose too many good people.” Despite 30 years of “Just Say No” rhetoric and […]

THE BREAKDOWN: Let Us Praise The Common Man

BY M. EMANUEL It’s been a wet-firecracker of a summer for hip-hop. Gone are the days when summer was the season to expect a heavy rotation of full-lengths from your favorite MCs — things have changed. Record sales are in the toilet, digital downloads are either destroying or saving the industry (depends on who you ask and what day you ask them) and cautious record labels are releasing albums at a snail’s pace, and only after they are assured that there is enough radio-friendly material to justify the six-figure palm-greasing required to make them hits. In the midst of this […]

MITT ROMNEY: I’m With Stupid

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has been really going after the Democrats as of late, slamming Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for saying that kindergartners should receive “age appropriate” sex education (LINK) (even though Romney supported “age appropriate” sex education in the Bay State when he was governor — read more about that HERE), implying Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., holds Marxist positions” (LINK) . And now our friends at TMZ.com have a photograph (LINK) of the governor posing for a picture with a supporter’s sign that reads: “No to Obama Osama and Chelsea’s Moma (sic).” [via POLITICAL PUNCH] FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: […]

King Britt, Need New Body Dude Score Pew Grants

Ki CUT CHEMIST: King Britt spins the crowd before Obama’s arrival at the Electric Factory, last month. Twelve fellows were awarded $50,000 each to spend any way they wish. The Pew program, in its 16th year, aims to identify Philadelphia-area artists at critical career junctures and give them the freedom to advance their artistic ambitions. “One of the things [recipients] say to us is that now when people ask them what they do, they say first and foremost, ‘I am an artist.’ There is something about the validation that these grants bring,” program director Melissa Franklin says. Validation, yes, and […]

HIZZONER ’07: New Mrs. Mayor Talks About ‘My Boo’

BY ANNETTE JOHN-HALL INQUIRER COLUMNIST She is girlfriend-warm, with welcoming eyes and features that resemble the Mona Lisa. And she can switch seamlessly between Mix Master Mike and Policy Maker Mike. She loves both the same. Most of all, she admires that he stands strong in what he believes, no matter how much heat comes his way. Even with his controversial “stop-and-frisk” proposal, which would allow police to stop and search those suspected of carrying illegal weapons in high-crime neighborhoods, “he didn’t back down,” she said. “He didn’t tell white people one thing and black people something else. . . . […]
