TONITE: Hail Mary, Full Of Grace

[Photo by ELIZABETH FIEND] BY MIKE WOLVERTON SPORTS GUY I was working on a theory yesterday at the start of the Eagles game. It went like this: for (probably) the first time in baseball history, the outcome of an NFL game would affect the World Series. After the Phillies Game 3 loss Halloween night, I figured that if the Eagles lost on Sunday afternoon, the fans at the Phillies game Sunday night would have a sense of impending doom, a fear of a totally lost weekend. And this is the kind of atmosphere that could carry over to the players, […]

WORLD SERIES: Yanks Take Game Three 8-5

MLB: Alex Rodriguez belted the first video-reviewed home run in World Series history to support another winning Andy Pettitte effort as the Yankees defeated the Phillies, 8-5, in Game 3 of the Fall Classic on Saturday at Citizens Bank Park. Nick Swisher and Hideki Matsui also homered for the Bombers, who overcame Jayson Werth’s two-homer evening as Pettitte won his Major League-leading 17th postseason game, guiding the Yankees into the drivers’ seat with a 2-1 World Series lead. MORE BUZZ BISSINGER: The list of offenses that Philadelphia sports fans have committed over the years is endless, some funny, some just […]

WORLD SERIES: Yanks Blunt Phils 3-1

BY MIKE WOLVERTON SPORTS GUY How weird is it that the Phillies are in the World Series as the defending champs, last year’s ace and World Series MVP is healthy and rested, and he doesn’t get the start in Game 1 or 2, in favor of two guys who not only weren’t on the team last year, they weren’t on the team in JUNE! Pedro signed July 15th, Cliff Lee was acquired July 29th, and Cole Hamels starts Game 3. Very weird. My thoughts as the game unfolded last night: Bottom 1st: Pedro looked awesome in the first inning. Fastball […]

BENSALEM 911: It Took FIVE Cops To Bust Woman Allegedly Offering Sex-For-World-Series-Tickets

NEW YORK POST: Within an hour of posting the ad, Finkelstein recounted, she heard from a man who said he was a construction worker and claimed to have an extra ticket. Finkelstein wanted to meet “somewhere I’d feel safe,” so she agreed to go to Bucks County to meet at Manny Brown’s, a popular bar and restaurant. “He had a couple of beers, and he bought me one,” Finkelstein said. They then started talking. “We were jovial, friendly, joking —the normal kind of conversation you would have sitting with someone you just met.” Citing the pending charges, Finkelstein declined to […]

WORLD SERIES: Bensalem Woman Arrested For Offering To Trade Sex For Series Tickets

INQUIRER: Bensalem police said they arrested a Philadelphia woman Tuesday after she offered to perform various sex acts to an undercover officer in exchange for tickets. According to police, Susan Finkelstein, 43, posted an ad on Craigslist that read:  “DESPERATE BLONDE NEEDS WS TIX (Philadelphia) “Diehard Phillies fan—gorgeous tall buxom blonde—in desperate need of two World Series Tickets. Price negotiable— I’m the creative type! Maybe we can help each other!” An undercover officer responded to the ad, police said, and arrested Finkelstein after she made her offer. MORE PHAWKER: This is the best use of severely limited police resources? Really? […]

RANT: A Pox Upon The House Of Yankees!

BY HEWHOCANNOTBENAMED Be it hereby announced. A pox upon all of your houses for your Yankee fandom. While I am ordinarily a Yankee-hater, John has fueled a new level of hate and vitriol in me because he called me last night and said “Man, it’s been soooo long since the Yankees have been in the World Series.” To me.  A Cubs fan.  And didn’t see a hint of irony in it.  I hope A-Rod’s arm falls off and Cashman quits to be replaced by Steve Phillips. I hope senile old George Steinbrenner breaks out of the nursing home bed he’s […]

TONIGHT: Phillies Lose, Eagles Win!

BY MIKE WOLVERTON SPORTS GUY Phils Lose! Sort of. It would have been nice for the Phillies if the Angels could have found a way to beat the Yankees in Game 6 last night. This would have set up a Game 7 tonight in which each team would have turned to their ace pitcher. Then C.C.Sabathia (or John Lackey, had the Angels won) would get one less turn against the Phillies in the World Series. As it is, Sabathia may start against the Phils in Games 1, 4 and 7 (if necessary). Tough task against one of the most dominant […]

WORLD SERIES: Yankees Hotel Foxtrot

NEW YORK TIMES: When they were new stars at an old park, the baseball season rarely ended until they were done playing. Now the Yankees’ core is older, the park is new and the World Series is no longer a birthright. But the stage is theirs again. After a six-year wait, Derek Jeter and the Yankees are back in the World Series, vanquishing the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, 5-2, to win the American League Championship Series, four games to two.It is the 40th pennant for the Yankees, who will host the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1 of […]

PHILLIES PHEVER: Stay Classy, Philadelphia

DAILY NEWS: AMID THOUSANDS of screaming, yelling, chanting, flag-waving, whistling, clapping, jumping, skateboarding, chest-bumping, body-surfing, drinking, shouting, photo-taking, texting, tailgating, music-playing fans celebrating the pennant-winning Phillies’ heading again to the World Series, only 49 people were arrested for mostly minor offenses. “That’s not many, considering the size of the crowds,” Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said yesterday. HELLO WORLD SERIES: We Are The Champions!

NEW YORK TIMES: The Phillies went 35 years between their first World Series (1915) and their second (1950). Then they went 30 years before their next World Series, in 1980. From a historical perspective, the idea that the Phillies have now won the pennant in consecutive seasons is astounding. As Richie Ashburn would have said, “Hard to believe, Harry.” MORE South Broad Street, 12:37 AM  [Photo by TIFFANY YOON]
