NEWS CLUES: It’s Like Adderall For Your Eyeballs
Florida Gets Medieval On Ass Of GOP Legislator Caught In Potty Sex Sting Florida State Rep. Bob Allen’s troubles may only get worse. Seconds after he was convicted Friday of soliciting a sex act in a park bathroom, legislative leaders were discussing how to remove him from office. The lawmaker is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday for the second-degree misdemeanor charge and could face a maximum 60 days in the county jail and a $500 fine. Prosecutors said after the verdict was announced that they intend to seek jail time. Because of the nature of the crime, prosecutors said, Allen […]

AMY MADHOUSE: London Cops Crowbar Winehouse’s Flat After Arresting Hubbo Police raided the London home of Amy Winehouse, using a crowbar to force open the door. The singer’s spokesman said she was not there at the time and that drugs were not involved. British media said the raid was related to the arrest of Winehouse’s husband and several other men on suspicion of trying to pervert the course of justice. Photographs in British newspapers yesterday showed police officers forcing open the home in Camden, north London. “The only thing I can tell you is that it has nothing to do […]
THE SURVEILLANCE STATE: 1984 Already Happened
1984 Has Been Brought To You By The Fine Folks At AT&T! BY ELLEN NAKASHIMA WASHINGTON POST STAFF WRITER His first inkling that something was amiss came in summer 2002 when he opened the door to admit a visitor from the National Security Agency to an office of AT&T in San Francisco.”What the heck is the NSA doing here?” Mark Klein, a former AT&T technician, said he asked himself. A year or so later, he stumbled upon documents that, he said, nearly caused him to fall out of his chair. The documents, he said, show that the NSA gained access […]
MAILBAG: How Interns Get Hired
DEAR PHAWKER, You’ve created quite a ruckus here at Temple. Although I don’t necessarily agree with your idea of the usefulness of Journalism, I appreciate what you said (that is, after I really thought about it). It’s revolutionary and spirited in a way that many journalists were supposed to be since day one and no longer are. Journalists and media lovers alike are supposed to have the anti-establishment burned into them at day one, but it seems that newspapers are just as bad as the government is now. We had talked briefly (after your presentation at Temple) about indie rock […]

NO MORE MR. NICE GUY: Obama Henchmen Killed The Colbert Candidacy Two prominent supporters of Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in South Carolina called state Democratic Party officials urging them to oppose putting comedian Stephen Colbert’s name on the primary ballot, according to party officials and Obama supporters with knowledge of the calls. Colbert, the host of Comedy Central’s “Colbert Report,” saw his hopes to be placed on the primary ballot ended last week when the South Carolina Democratic Party executive council voted 13-3 to block his bid, with the majority of voters saying he was not a viable enough […]

PAPERBOY EXTRA: The Passion Of The Phawker
From this week’s issue of the Philadelphia Weekly: Running about an hour late, local blogger Jonathan Valania, a former PW staff writer, blew into a 300-student journalism class at Temple University last week with a devil-may-care attitude and what he thought were a few sly remarks intended to spark debate. Valania, 41 — founder and editor of a news and culture blog called Phawker — all but sprinted to the front of the room, and without so much as an introduction, asked the class how many students were majoring in journalism. When the majority of the students in the lecture […]

R.O.C.K. IN THE 215: Trolleyvox Gets Props In NY Times
THE TROLLEYVOX Folk-rock lives on in the Trolleyvox, an indie Philadelphia band with the chutzpah to release a double album: “Your Secret Safe/Luzerne” (Transit of Venus). “Luzerne” features the guitarist Andrew Chalfen and the singer Beth Filla, in quiet songs and fingerpicking guitar, while “Your Secret Safe” plugs in and adds a rhythm section. Making no secret of its respect for the Who and the Byrds, the full band puts brasher riffs behind clear-cut melodies and lyrics just circuitous enough to be worth untangling: “The anecdotal evidence/The deviance, the decadence/Mix up all the elements.” [via NEW YORK TIMES]
