TODAY I SAW. . .

BY JEFF DEENEY TODAY I SAW another of the 9th Street methadone clinic’s finest, perusing the perfume selection at the Rite Aid on 12th and Girard. She was a tall, stick-skinny white girl, her cheeks sunken and pale skin pulled taut across her cheekbones. Her eyes weren’t even open when she reached to grab a bottle off a shelf in the front of the store facing the register. Instead of closing her hand around the bottle and picking it up, she pushed it until it fell on the floor. I expected it to shatter, but apparently cheap perfume bottles aren’t […]

WORTH REPEATING: Red Meat For Rotting Vegetables

THE NEW REPUBLIC: But in the case of his trip to South Philly, Giuliani’s choice showed more than a willingness to pander to a guy he not so long ago might have rebuked. It also brought up another common knock against the man who foisted Bernie Kerik on the nation: He’s a lousy judge of character. On the surface, Giuliani’s camp likely saw Vento as an example of the outer-borough sort he once wooed as mayor. Before he put up his English-only sign, Vento’s most prominent political statement came in outfitting Geno’s staffers in t-shirts calling for Mumia Abu-Jamaal’s […]

RICH MAN’S ASSPANTS: BRANSON LITERALLY HOISTS SELF BY HIS OWN PETARD The billionaire entrepreneur and serial self-publicist had decided to descend 407ft from the top of the Palms Casino Hotel, Las Vegas, to promote Virgin America, a new airline offering domestic flights in the U.S. It all started so well. Strapped in a harness and attached to a cable, the 57-year-old tycoon beamed confidently before taking a running jump from the roof. As he descended rapidly, he pulled airline tickets out of his pocket and scattered them to the ground as part of the bungee-cum-abseiling stunt. But instead of gliding […]

CURIOSITY KILLS: BEWARE THE LEAD MONKEY Marvel Enterprises says it has halted shipments of Curious George products made in China. And it says it will issue a recall if testing backs up claims by a nonprofit group that says it found a product had an illegally high amount of lead. The allegation was made by the California-based Center for Environmental Health. It says tests on a Curious George doll revealed 10 times the new legal maximum of lead. C-E-H says that it bought the toy at a Toys “R” Us. Marvel spokesman David Collins says his firm will order a […]

PAPERBOY: ‘I Got Yer Subprime Right HERE!’ Edition

BY AMY Z. QUINN Like time, news waits for no man. Keeping up with the funny papers has always been an all-day job, even in the pre-Internets era. These days, however, it’s a two-man job. That’s right — these days you need someone to do your reading for you, or risk falling hopelessly behind and, as a result, increasing your chances of dying lonely and somewhat bitter. Hey, we know how it is — so many words to read, so little time to surf for free porn. That’s why every week, PAPERBOY does your alt-weekly reading for you, freeing up […]

INSTA-REVIEW: Radiohead In Rainbows

BY JONATHAN VALANIA FOR THE INQUIRER It’s difficult after just three or four listens to rate this album, but my initial reaction is that In Rainbows (****) is as fine a Radiohead album as I have ever heard. The devoted will be immensely gratified, and converts will be drawn in by all the buzz — and what proves to be bewitchingly ethereal, yet altogether visceral, rock music. The 10-song In Rainbows collapses into one tidy package all the Radioheads we have come to know: folk-rock Radiohead, electronica Radiohead, alt-rock Radiohead, prog-rock Radiohead. Not only does the band seem to nail […]

GAYBO: My Big Gay Indian Summer

BY TOMMY ZANE GAYDAR EDITOR Fall is always my favorite time of year. There’s a huge influx of students moving into the city and summer gasps its last breaths, as we have seen these last few days. This year, The Gayborhood has some new spots on the menu to offer. Bill Wood, former owner of the ubiquitous Woody’s, has opened his lavish and upwardly mobile Knock. Entrees include pan-seared scallops, fire-roasted game hen and a grilled pork chop with chocolate sauce. Located at 225 South 12th St. (corner of Locust), Knock caters to a sophisticated crowd, so don’t be a […]

WTF: Joey Sweeney Learns To Drive?

INQUIRER: Northern Liberties was the scene of extensive car carnage last night, as an out-of-control driver swiped about 20 vehicles along Second Street, according to area residents. The accident unfolded when a maroon Buick LaSabre sped south on Second Street, according to doctoral student Michelle Renee Chyatte, 32, a former freelance reporter, who talked with witnesses and police at the scene last night. The accidents began at Second and George, when the LaSabre struck a car trying to make a turn and spinning it into a fence. The driver, dazed or trapped, didn’t get out for about 20 minutes until […]

TODAY I SAW . . .

BY JEFF DEENEY TODAY I SAW the words “Da Bottom” and “36th St.” written in black magic marker on the front door to Mantua Hall. The door is made from stainless steel and has a scratched-up window that looks over the lobby past the security guard’s window. There’s another identical exit door with the same words scrawled on it on the other side of a partition. It swings open and a tired looking, deathly skinny women walks past, dragging two dripping bags of garbage behind her. Mantua Hall is one of the last of a dying breed; it’s a high-rise […]

WATERGATE TAPE: Nixon Describes Fred Thompson As A Useful Idiot Fred Thompson has made much of his role 30 years ago as a young Senate lawyer helping to lead the investigation of the Watergate scandal and President Richard Nixon. But a much different, less valiant picture of Thompson emerges from listening to the White House audiotapes made at the time, as President Nixon plotted strategy with his aides in the Oval Office. Thompson’s job on the Watergate committee was to lead the Republican side of the investigation. As the investigation picked up speed, Nixon grew increasingly concerned about whether Thompson […]
