INQUIRER: Hidden beneath a blanket of high weeds, detectives found the gun used in a triple shooting that led to a videotaped police beating on May 5, authorities said yesterday. The gun — a Glock 9 mm — was found last week in an overgrown, wooded area along North 2nd Street, not far from where cops stopped three shooting suspects in a gold Grand Marquis and delivered a barrage of kicks and punches in an incident that sullied the city’s reputation. Ballistic tests matched the gun to fired shell casings found at 4th and Annsbury streets, North Philadelphia, where police […]
ART BRUT: The Sudden Death and Heroic Life Of Ann d’Harnoncourt, Director Of Philadelphia Museum Of Art
NEW YORK TIMES: By any measure, Anne d’Harnoncourt’s tenure as director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, cut short by her sudden death on Sunday at 64, was distinguished. It shone forth in major acquisitions, successful fund drives, vast gallery renovations, a marvelous rehang of the collection and, above all, her refusal to let the museum become a three-ring circus. Having seen the Philadelphia museum — or at least its steps — become a destination after the 1976 film “Rocky,” she did not succumb to showy architecture; the new wing being planned at the time of her death has been […]
INSTA-REVIEW: The Dude Stripped Bare
REMINDER: Still playing on Phawker Radio! Why? Because The Dude Abides. BY ED KING, ROCK EXPERT Hey, I remember reading about this band! This was Tom Petty‘s Gainesville, FL band before he was signed as a solo artist, putting Mudcrutch bandmates Mike Campbell (guitar) and Benmont Tench (keyboards) on the payroll. Last month saw the release of an honest-to-goodness Mudcrutch album, with guitarist Tom Leadon and drummer Randall Marsh easing back into what must have been a 32-year interrupted dream. Meanwhile, the three who carried over to the Heartbreakers get a chance to cultivate their beards, get their garage band improv […]

THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW: Amber & Cambria
[Photos by JUSTIN ROMAN] BY JEFF DEENEY The intersection of Cambria and Amber streets is a good six blocks away from the endemic drug violence of the Badlands — sometimes that seems like six miles, and sometimes like six inches. It sits east of Frankford Avenue and a full five blocks from the El, far enough away that you can’t even see the hulking steel skeleton that straddles Kensington Avenue from here. Crime and violence has seeped north and east from West Kensington over the years, slowly and steadily creeping further and further into the surrounding neighborhoods of the Lower […]

KILLADELPHIA: 4 More Dead Since U Went To Bed
INQUIRER: A pregnant Germantown woman who was shot in the head Sunday night died early this morning at Albert Einstein Medical Center, police said. Bobbi Booker, 26, was shot in her left temple as her live-in boyfriend exchanged gunfire with another man outside the couple’s Queen Lane apartment in Germantown. Booker, who was four-months pregnant, had been on life-support since the shooting. Doctors were not able to save her four-month old unborn child, police said. Booker had two other young children. Police charged her boyfriend, Michael Thomas, 26, and Lamar Johnson, 22, with two counts each of attempted murder, aggravated […]
MEOW MIX: Mendte, Mendte, Mendte!
My sainted mother, who is an enthusiastic conspiracy theorist, is actually pissed off at Alycia Lane for “having the FBI investigate her email,” thus persecuting poor Larry Mendte for (allegedly) checking her email “hundreds of times” then blabbing her business to the tabs? Hell, if anything, this might be the one thing that will make me actually like Lane, at long last! Because if Mendte was sitting next to Lane on the anchor desk at the same time he was hacking into her email, then he’s a dirtball who deserves what he gets and she goes from bimbo to woman […]
TONITE: The Ministry Of Silly Laughs
BY DAVE WALK Lurking in the under belly of the second floor of Fergie’s Pub is a new comedy show called THE MINISTRY OF SECRET JOKES. The origins and purpose of the show are, naturally, very secretive, but we’ve managed to covertly infiltrate the premises to gather data on what really goes on behind closed doors. The show appears to be free of charge to the converted and begins around 9 PM Eastern Standard Time. It is hosted by one Doogie Horner, a local stand-up comedian. Horner appears to be forced to run the show against his will. In an […]
