INSTA-REVIEW: The Dude Stripped Bare

REMINDER: Still playing on Phawker Radio! Why? Because The Dude Abides. BY ED KING, ROCK EXPERT Hey, I remember reading about this band! This was Tom Petty‘s Gainesville, FL band before he was signed as a solo artist, putting Mudcrutch bandmates Mike Campbell (guitar) and Benmont Tench (keyboards) on the payroll. Last month saw the release of an honest-to-goodness Mudcrutch album, with guitarist Tom Leadon and drummer Randall Marsh easing back into what must have been a 32-year interrupted dream. Meanwhile, the three who carried over to the Heartbreakers get a chance to cultivate their beards, get their garage band improv […]

PARTY’S OVER: Super Delegates Stampede To Obama

His comments came as Obama clinched the nomination, according to a tally of convention delegates by The Associated Press. Carter, a superdelegate, has remained officially neutral in the race but has offered strong hints that he would end up in Obama’s corner. He has noted that his […]

SCARFACE: Amy Winehouse Remains The Most Persuasive Anti-Drug Ad We Have Ever Seen

DAILY MAIL: Amy Winehouse today spent more than an hour in court supporting her husband who faces charges of assault and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. The troubled star sat in the front row of the public gallery as Snaresbrook Crown Court, east London, and smiled lovingly at Blake Fielder-Civil, who smiled back at her from the dock. Winehouse wore a short blue spotted dress in a clear effort to look smart for her husband’s trial, but the classy clothes failed to hide her alarmingly bad skin. The singer’s ragged appearance shocked onlookers as she arrived at court. […]

THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW: Amber & Cambria

[Photos by JUSTIN ROMAN] BY JEFF DEENEY The intersection of Cambria and Amber streets is a good six blocks away from the endemic drug violence of the Badlands — sometimes that seems like six miles, and sometimes like six inches. It sits east of Frankford Avenue and a full five blocks from the El, far enough away that you can’t even see the hulking steel skeleton that straddles Kensington Avenue from here. Crime and violence has seeped north and east from West Kensington over the years, slowly and steadily creeping further and further into the surrounding neighborhoods of the Lower […]

BUBBA AGONISTES: Vanity (Un)Fair?

VANITY FAIR: Bill Clinton’s relevance—and his presence in public life—is as close to permanent as any politician’s can be. Before touching off a string of controversies in his wife’s campaign this year, he was among the most popular figures on the planet, one of only three Democratic presidents in the 20th century to serve two full terms. His looming presence will make him a factor in the Democratic vice-presidential sweepstakes, the fall campaign, and every future presidential election of his lifetime, whatever his wife’s fate. I have covered Clinton on and off for 16 years, since his 1992 presidential campaign. […]

MEOW MIX: Mendte, Mendte, Mendte!

My sainted mother, who is an enthusiastic conspiracy theorist, is actually pissed off at Alycia Lane for “having the FBI investigate her email,” thus persecuting poor Larry Mendte for (allegedly) checking her email “hundreds of times” then blabbing her business to the tabs? Hell, if anything, this might be the one thing that will make me actually like Lane, at long last! Because if Mendte was sitting next to Lane on the anchor desk at the same time he was hacking into her email, then he’s a dirtball who deserves what he gets and she goes from bimbo to woman […]

BO DIDDLEY: RIP

NEW YORK TIMES:  Bo Diddley, a founding father of rock ‘n’ roll whose distinctive ”shave and a haircut, two bits” rhythm and innovative guitar effects inspired legions of other musicians, died Monday after months of ill health. He was 79. Diddley died of heart failure at his home in Archer, Fla., spokeswoman Susan Clary said. He had suffered a heart attack in August, three months after suffering a stroke while touring in Iowa. Doctors said the stroke affected his ability to speak, and he had returned to Florida to continue rehabilitation. The legendary singer and performer, known for his homemade […]
