CHERTOFF: We Have Nothing To Fear But Politically-Motivated Fearmongering Itself
US Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff was in Philadelphia on Thursday to talk about the need to understand how terrorists make bombs and our need to understand how to counter them. Chertoff says improvised explosive devices are now the weapons of choice for terrorists: “Whether it’s London or Glasgow, or a sea in Germany, or Bali in the South Pacific, or here in Philadelphia, the only way to defeat an IED is to be able to detect it, prevent it and disarm it.” Chertoff says Tripwire gives bomb experts the latest bomb recipes so that law enforcement can recognize the […]
PARIS, TEXAS: The Next Jena
CHICAGO TRIBUNE: PARIS, Texas — “Some of the things that happen here would not happen if we were in Dallas or Houston,” Cherry said. “They happen because we are in this closed town. I compare it to 1930s.” There was the 19-year-old white man, convicted last July of criminally negligent homicide for killing a 54-year-old black woman and her 3-year-old grandson with his truck, who was sentenced in Paris to probation and required to send an annual Christmas card to the victims’ family. And then there is the case that most troubles Cherry and leaders of the Texas NAACP, involving […]

iMAYOR: Hooray! I Added Five More Cops!
When Police Commissioner Sylvester M. Johnson announced with fanfare last week that state police would be patrolling high-crime neighborhoods to help control growing gun violence, officials declined — citing strategic reasons — to say how many troopers would be involved. Yesterday, Mayor Street let it slip. The number, he said, is five. Street, in unsolicited comments, mentioned the number of troopers working with city police while he was attending a city-sponsored job fair that drew 2,000 people to the Liacouras Center in North Philadelphia yesterday morning. He complained that the news media do not cover such events, but gave significant […]
MEAT IS MURDER: Alicia Silverstone PETA Ad
HOUSTON (AP) — An animal rights group says Alicia Silverstone appears naked in a television ad promoting vegetarianism that was to debut Wednesday in Houston. The 30-second ad was to air about two dozen times in Houston on Wednesday, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said. PETA said Houston was picked for the commercial’s launch because it is often high on lists of cities with unhealthy eating habits. Houston was named the sixth fattest city in the nation by Men’s Fitness magazine this year.

[Photo by CARLOS FERNANDEZ] ALL THE YOUNG DUDES: Girl Talk + Friends, Starlight Ballroom, September 17 EVA SAYS: Monday night at the Starlight Ballroom was all about heavy-petting and robot dancing. And I do mean heavy, baby. DJ Gregg Gillis, AKA Girl Talk, brought together a sold out crowd of hyper, manic, oddly-dressed, or even not-dressed-at-all hipsters who bum-rushed the stage within seconds of Gillis firing up the Mac Pro that makes it all possible. It didn’t matter that Girl Talk’s hooded figure or scruffy face couldn’t be seen even from the lip of the stage — chances are he […]
BLOWBACK: Iran Threatens To Bomb Israel If Attacked
ASSOCIATED PRESS: TEHRAN, Iran — The deputy commander of Iran’s air force said Wednesday that plans have been drawn up to bomb Israel if the Jewish state attacks Iran, according to the semiofficial Fars news agency. The announcement came amid rising tensions in the region, with the United States calling for a new round of U.N. sanctions against Iran over its disputed nuclear program and Israeli planes having recently overflown, and perhaps even attacked, Iranian ally Syria. On Sunday, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said the international community should prepare for the possibility of war in the event that Iran […]
KILLADELPHIA: ‘I Don’t Care What Kia Gregory Says’
Today on NPR’s Here & Now, heard locally on WHYY, host Robin Young interviewed Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson about his call to raise a 10,000 man army of voluntary crisis interventionists to help defuse the violence before it starts on the blocks where they live. Young quotes PW’s Kia Gregory calling on Johnson to resign to the Commish, to which he responds “I don’t care what Kia Gregory thinks.” Young continues to quote from Gregory’s work, citing the fact that several hundred beat cops have been pulled off the street and put in desk jobs during the Commish’s reign. […]
