We Know It’s Only Rock N’ Roll But We Like It

MAHOGANY RUSH: Mahogany, Johnny Brendas, Last Night BY TIFFANY YOON Phawker got a bit held up watching the Democratic debate at some dingy dive bar, and missed Andrew Gilligan’s shoegazin’ trio :ravens:and:vultures. Phawker watched Gilligan and the sisters of :ravens:and:vultures: before at Pi Lam, and was sad to miss the band perform at one of our favorite venues. The second band Phawker missed because of the mother&%$& debate missed was Arc in Round, with members of Philadelphia’s own Relay, a great experimental indie band that’s been raved by CMJ and Spin. Phawker curses the 26th Democratic debate and wishes it […]

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: He Is The One

Dear Friends and Fans: Like most of you, I’ve been following the campaign and I have now seen and heard enough to know where I stand. Senator Obama, in my view, is head and shoulders above the rest. He has the depth, the reflectiveness, and the resilience to be our next President. He speaks to the America I’ve envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that’s interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit. A place where “…nobody […]

HEAR YE: Joy Division The Best Of

Now playing on Phawker Radio! Why? Because love you, ya big dummy! “Because ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart,’ a weirdly tranquilized effervescence, the pain of love, filtered, forced, dreamed through a deep love of melody, the pop song as a kind of salvation, and all this actually happened, in real life, and then in a recording studio… Because of ‘Atmosphere,’the stunning durability, the lonely sensation of monstrous fatigue, the way the pattern of a dream fades when you wake, but the aura, ambience, timbre and tonality remain, the singer’s uncanny gaze following the awesome trajectory of his voice… Because of […]

SONGS MEAN ALOT, VOL. 1 Matt Pond PA, “Last Light,” from the album Last Light

BY JOE WARMINSKY A confession: Although I’m a fellow Keystone Stater, I ignored Matt Pond PA until a few months ago, and I’m not even sure why I decided to listen to Last Light, the long-running band’s 2007 disc. Guilt? Housecleaning? Doesn’t matter. Bingo, voila, whoo, it’s front-loaded with a majestic title track that shoves aside alt-rock’s amorphous, self-conscious present and instead intelligently honors the ancient “120 Minutes” aesthetic: The production is proudly slick; the drums have some of that big ’80s sound; the guitar riffs are firm, but also classically shoegazerish; and the vocals are pushed frontward. And there […]
