NUCLEAR PLANT WORKER ARRESTED FOR BRINGING PIPE BOMB TO WORK PHOENIX (AP) — Security officials at the nation’s largest nuclear power plant detained a contract worker with a small explosive device in the back of his pickup truck Friday, authorities said. The worker was stopped and detained at the entrance of the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, said U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Victor Dricks. Security officials then put the nuclear station on lockdown, prohibiting anyone from entering or leaving the facility. Authorities described the device as a small capped pipe that contained suspicious residue. Capt. Paul Chagolla with the […]
HOT DOCUMENT: We Are Watching You
Hi, Mr. Valania, As you probably know, a lot of the people from my journalism class you visited last Tuesday have pretty strong opinions about some of the things you said, particularly when you talked about journalism being a useless major. Some students, and my professor, George Miller, disagree with what you said. On our class blog, he wrote that you were “Dead wrong.” and that journalists need to have a specific background they can only get by majoring in journalism. I’m working on an article about what you said [for the Philadelphia Weekly], and I’ve talked to a lot […]

SUICIDE NOT PAINLESS NOW: Accidental Attempted Murder-Suicide Girl TOKYO – A woman leaped from an 11-story Tokyo apartment Wednesday in an apparent suicide, striking and seriously injuring a passer-by, Kyodo News reported on Wednesday. The unidentified woman, who appeared to be in her 30s or 40s, appeared to have jumped from the building onto a busy Tokyo street and was declared dead at the scene. She hit a 47-year-old male pedestrian who suffered a brain injury. Japan has one of the industrial world’s highest suicide rates, with more than 32,000 people taking their own lives in 2006. WORTH REPEATING: Be Very Afraid, Please
BY BILL MAHER This week — as every week — all the Republican candidates talked about was who was toughest in the war on terror. While the country’s most populous state literally burned. The Democrats, as usual, said nothing, because they didn’t want to offend fire. The Republicans, including the scaremonger in chief, sell themselves as protectors of our safety. But since they’re all, except for McCain, armchair warriors, they’re only comfortable protecting us from fears they made up. Like the way Iran is itching for a war with the United States now. Ahmadinejad is pure evil! Terror has a […]
MEDIA: FEAR OF A HOMELESS PLANET
BY JEFF DEENEY I was struck by a sense of déjà vu while looking at the Sunday Inquirer. They’ve gotten around to noting, once again, that the numbers of homeless men and women living on the streets — especially on the Parkway — are on the rise. Funny, if you remember this article from a little more than a year ago, you’ll notice that they’re essentially the same story, almost verbatim. Last year, the focus was on whether or not charity groups should be able to feed the homeless on the Parkway, and this year the focus is on a […]
WORTH REPEATING: Triumph Of The Will
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Still from Triumph Of The Will directed by Leni Riefenstahl HERMAN GOERING*: Naturally, the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. INTERVIEWER: There is one difference. In a democracy the people have some say in the matter through their […]
HOT DOC: How To Restore The Fourth Amendment
Tell Harry Reid: No Immunity for Lawbreaking Companies The Senate is considering a bill that would grant immunity to any telecom company that assisted in the administration’s illegal wiretapping. Chris Dodd promised to put a hold on any such bill, and Joe Biden and Barack Obama pledged to uphold it. We believe that any bill coming before the Senate that includes provisions for so-called ‘amnesty’ for large companies involved in illegally spying on Americans should be opposed, and have authored a letter to this effect addressed to Majority Leader Reid. You can co-sign it below. The letter will also be […]
OiNK TAKEDOWN: The Shit Hits The Fans
SHERIFF’S SALE: OiNK, a massive P2P file-sharing site with a reported membership of 180,000, was shutdown by Interpol on Tuesday. This ominous placeholder now greets visitors. Closed internet communities known as “ripping groups” often get demos, early mixes of commercial releases and promotional copies of pre-release albums in advance of release with a view to distributing the music as widely and as far ahead of release as possible. Each ripping group gains cachet amongst its peers for being the first to get new music and uses torrent sites to distribute the music as widely as possible. OiNK operated an exclusive […]
RIGHT BRAIN/LEFT BRAIN: Can’t We All Get Along?
The Right Brain vs Left Brain test: Do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise? If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa. Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it. [via DAILY TELEGRAPH]
