SH*T MY UNCLE SAYS: Beware The Trojan Elephant

BY WILLIAM C. HENRY In the coming weeks, look for Republicans to offer a percentage point or two increase in the top tax rate in exchange for slashed spending on social welfare programs, and parade it as evidence of their willingness to “compromise.” How magnanimous. Even more deceitful, however, pay particular notice to the fact that neither party will even hint at reasonable, let alone drastic, reductions in our barbarous military squandering — call it the ultimate “hawk” that never gets dredged up and expelled — when they present their respective Pecksniffian “equitable” and “responsible” (do not under any […]

NOTHING IS REAL: The JFK Assassination

Illustration by PRINT MAFIA The Last Confessions of E. Howard Hunt He was the ultimate keeper of secrets, lurking in the shadows of American history. He toppled banana republics, planned the Bay of Pigs invasion and led the Watergate break-in. Now he would reveal what he’d always kept hidden: who killed JFK BY ERIK HEDEGAARD/ROLLING STONE EDITOR’S NOTE: Ordinarily we would tease a few paragraphs from the story and then send you to RS’s web site, but for reasons unclear this article is no longer there. Hence we have run it here in its entirety. It originally ran in the […]

INCOMING: Q&A w/ John Waters, Lord Of The Trash

In honor of Mr. Waters coming to town next Thursday to mount his one-man Christmas show at the Troc, we will be re-running our 2010 Q&A with him. Discussed: LSD, outsider porn, fuzzy sweaters, uptight gay bars, Charlie Manson, Johnny Mathis, censorship, why the Chipmunks are far superior to the Beatles, and why he hasn’t made a film in years. Look for it Friday on a Phawker near you! RELATED: Just when you think you can’t stand to hear another Christmas carol, here I come with a holiday treat that will make you actually appreciate the insanity of the Yuletide […]

THE PEOPLE HAVE TOKEN: More Coloradans Voted To Legalize Marijuana Than Voted For The President

Just sayin’. NPR: Parts of new laws in Colorado and Washington that legalize small amounts of recreational marijuana will take effect early next month. The Obama administration needs to choose whether it will sue to stop the legislation or let those states go their own way — even though the drug remains illegal under federal law. Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, says the message he got from voters is unambiguous. “Our voters want marijuana to be regulated, like alcohol,” Hickenlooper said at a recent news conference. “That’s what they clearly said.” Hickenlooper has talked with the U.S. attorney general, […]

CONCERT REVIEW: Guitars 4 Vets

BY JOE PAONE MATH ROCK CORRESPONDENT It takes a lot to extricate me from the warm embrace of South Philadelphia and into our metro area’s nether regions. It takes even more to *move* me when I’ve found myself in those remote outposts. But there I was Saturday night, motoring on the dark roads of Bucks County up to its comfy little seat, Doylestown, for a show that I dare say I shan’t forget for some time. The great local institution Siren Records was hosting a benefit to aid  Guitars for Vets, a highly worthy non-profit organization that, in its own […]

TONIGHT: The ‘Judas’ Priest

WIKIPEDIA: The polarised responses of Dylan’s fans were exacerbated by the structure of his concerts in late 1965 and 1966; the first half would be ‘folk,’ Dylan solo accompanying himself on acoustic guitar and harmonica; with the second half ‘rock,’ Dylan and the Hawks with electric guitars and a full rock and roll combo. The rock segment was often greeted with hostility, as seen in shows in Sheffield and Newcastle upon Tyne in No Direction Home. Footage from the Manchester concert, at the end of that film, includes the infamous “Judas” heckling incident. During a quiet moment in between songs […]

NPR FOR THE DEF: Giving Public Radio Edge Since 2006

Illustration by ROBERLAN FRESH AIR What did Jesus look like? The many different depictions of Christ tell a story about race and religion in America. Edward J. Blum and Paul Harvey explore that history in their new book, The Color of Christ: The Son of God and the Saga of Race in America. The book traces how different races and ethnic groups claimed Christ as their own — and how depictions of Jesus have both inspired civil rights crusades, and been used to justify the violence of white supremacists. The Ku Klux Klan could not rely on Christian doctrine to […]

BIRDLAND: Skyfall

BY JOE PAONE IGGLES CORRESPONDENT OK, I knew this team was lousy and rudderless, but what the hell was THAT yesterday? I’ve never seen a Philadelphia team, especially with the pedigree this one supposedly has, fall so completely apart. I’ve never seen a Philadelphia team just flat-out give up, save for maybe those Mike McMahon-at-QB games in 2005. I’m trying my hardest to remember to forget. But reality is a cold, insistent bitch. The Eagles simply, totally quit yesterday. Worse, they might have THOUGHT they were giving maximum effort, which is even more dangerous. Simply put, we’ve got an NFL […]

SIDEWALKING: Death From Above

A Palestinian man carries the dead body of a child from the al-Dallu family out from the rubble after an Israeli missile struck a family home killing at least seven members of the same family in Gaza City on November 18, 2012. Via AFP CBS NEWS: An Israeli missile ripped through a two-story home in a residential area of Gaza City on Sunday, killing at least 11 civilians, including four young children and an 81-year-old woman, in the single deadliest attack of Israel’s offensive against Islamic militants. A similar scene unfolded elsewhere in the city early Monday, when an airstrike […]
