EARLY WORD: Beach Boy

The Dirty Beaches play First Unitarian May 3rd with Xiu Xiu! *** THE DIRTY BEACHES Badlands The debut full-length by Taiwanese-born Canadian lo-fi minimalist/one man band Alex Zhang Hungtai, slightly better known by his stage name Dirty Beaches, sounds like a speakers-blown transistor radio tuned to The Geator stuffed into the back pocket of some poor fucker whacked-and-hacked by Joe Pesci, tossed overboard and currently resting in pieces at the bottom of the sea. No wait, it sounds like prom night 1958 on angel dust right before the flying saucers land and worlds collide. Scratch that. It sounds like there’s […]

Why You Can’t Use Your Smartphone Or Tablet Or E-Reader On A Plane And Why That Might Change

NEW YORK TIMES: The F.A.A. said that the agency has decided to take a “fresh look” at the use of personal electronics on planes. Yes, you read that correctly. The F.A.A., which in the past has essentially said, “No, because I said so,” is going to explore testing e-readers, tablets and certain other gadgets on planes. The last time this testing was […]

It is a contributing factor to prostitution and sex trafficking.” He demands a crackdown on the distribution of hardcore pornography on the Internet, in addition to material on cable/satellite TV, hotel/motel TV, retail shops and through the mail. What qualifies as “hardcore” remains unclear. […]

CINEMA: House Of Pain

2011, directed by Lynne Ramsay, 112 minutes, U.K.) BY DAN BUSKIRK FILM CRITIC The opening image in director Lynne Ramsay’s suburban nightmare, We Need To Talk About Kevin, is of household curtains blowing in the dark, accompanied to the sound of a sprinkler’s rhythmic spraying, with the image ultimately burning out into white light. The natural elements, water, air, and light should all be comforting but something foreboding is behind that curtain, something that we won’t see until the final act of this grim domestic horror story. Similarly, the bond between mother and child is sacred part of life, yet […]
