Scientists know that lung cancer cells produce substances that would be expected to cause the immune system to attack and eliminate them. But for unknown reasons, the immune system does not kill lung cancer cells. The vaccine used in this trial is meant to teach the immune system to respond to lung cancer cells. It does this by taking advantage of one of the strongest human immune responses – the response to antigens on cells from animals such as pigs or mice. Such antigens provoke a rapid immune response that destroys foreign cells within hours. The HyperAcute vaccine consists of […]

GAMBLOR: Election Day Volunteers Are Needed
This message was sent by your Salsa for Democracy organizer, Anne Dicker. The campaign is down to the wire, and the two most outspoken candidates working against casinos need help getting out the vote: Matt Ruben and Caryn Hunt. Matt is endorsed by Democracy for America and Philly for Change. Caryn is endorsed by Philly NOW. They need help around the city on Tuesday May 15th. Can I ask for your help? Shifts are available all day, but the greatest need is in the morning, and after work. Please give me a call at 267-262-3160. Thanks! Anne BALLOT FOR CHANGE: […]

SHAME OF THE CITY: Street Refuses To Cop To Paddling Anti-Nutter Swiftboat With Fundraising Calls, Blames Inquirer For Printing The Horrible Truth
A clearly agitated Mayor John Street was refusing to talk about his efforts on behalf of a group that is behind an advertisement attacking the apparent front-runner in next week’s Democratic mayoral primary (see related story). Reporters have been trying to follow up on word that the mayor has been helping to raise money for the anti-Nutter group. The mayor went on a rant against The Philadelphia Inquirer for sending a reporter to knock on his door Wednesday night. That reporter had a door slammed in her face. Street’s spokesman confirms that the mayor had made fundraising calls on behalf of […]
GAYBO: From Helsinki With Love*
PHILEBRITY? NYET!: Team Latvia Flies The Phawker Flag At Eurovision TOMMY ZANE REPORTS: HELSINKI, FINLAND — Hit Hercules Gay Disco last night with my dear journalist friends, Maria, Viv and Timo. Eurovision 2006’s 4th place finisher Mihai Traistariu, a Romanian mouthful (pun intended), sang his Italo-disco hit, “Tornero.” Maria, Viv, Timo and I, having imbibed numerous apple ciders, were certainly feeling that feeling that Eurovision magic. Apparently, one troll-like gay elder of Finnish descent was already a few drinks up on us, and felt up Maria for a frightening dance-off to Cher’s “Believe.” Never one to turn up a challenge, […]

SHAME OF THE CITY: The Swiftboating Of Nutter
We are fairly certain that if Martin Luther King came back today and saw how the legacy of the Civil Rights struggle was being manipulated to scare off black voters from pulling the lever for an accomplished and more-than-qualified black candidate — well, he’d probably never stop vomiting. (Yes, we are talking to you, John Street) We’d like to see a commercial standing up for the ‘rights’ of the dead, namely the right to life — arguably the most civil right of them all. The murder rate in the city of Philadelphia just rolled over to 139 140 dead in […]
KEYSTONE POLL: Nutter Takes Commanding Lead
Michael Nutter has taken the lead in the mayor’s race — the third man to lead this bumpy, ever-changing race, according to a new Daily News Keystone Poll released May 9, 2007. But the poll also finds a great deal of “uncertainty and potential for change” among the city’s Democratic voters. Nutter’s poll numbers have jumped from 12 percent in the April poll to 31 percent now. Tom Knox polled at 21 percent; Chaka Fattah, 13 percent; Bob Brady, 11 percent; and Dwight Evans, 3 percent. Twenty-one percent were undecided, say the pollsters, the Center for Opinion Research of the […]

TODAY I SAW…
BY JEFF DEENEY “Today I saw…” is a series of nonfiction shorts based on my experiences as a caseworker serving formerly homeless families now living in North and West Philadelphia. I decided not long after starting the job that I was seeing so many fascinating and disturbing things in the city’s poorest neighborhoods that I needed to start cataloging them. I hope this bi-weekly column serves as a record of a side of the city that many Philadelphians don’t come in contact with on a daily basis. I want to capture moments not frequently covered by the local media, […]
GAYBO: FROM HELSINKI WITH LOVE
TOMMY ZANE REPORTS: HELSINKI, Finland — Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the gayest of them all: a.) A drag queen lip-synching “It’s Raining Men”; b.) Judy Garland singing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” or c.) A stripper at Woody’s gyrating to Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff”? Well, the answer is obviously d.) none of the above, because I’m here in Helsinki for the gayest show on earth, the Eurovision Song Contest. And child, every queen on the continent is here. By Saturday night, 100 million people from Istanbul to Copenhagen will be tuned in to root for their respective faves in […]
