BRITNEY SPEARS: LAST YEAR’S PUSSY

BY TAMMY ADARIS Let’s get one thing straight from the get-go: Britney Spears is many things, but she is NOT fat. In fact, put her in any average suburban neighborhood, and she’d be Queen of the MILFs on any block. That is, however, in clothes that actually, you know, flatter her physique, not fillet it. But as we know all too well, nothing about the former Mrs. Federline — save her ongoing capacity to leave people who should know better by now gawking in horror — seems to fit properly. More disturbing than that vision of a doughy, vacant-eyed Britney […]

GAMBLOR: Protesters Shut Down Gaming Board

PHILADELPHIA – People opposed to the siting of two casinos in their Philadelphia neighborhoods have disrupted a meeting by state regulators. The protests [not pictured] forced the Gaming Control Board to end its session before it could complete its agenda. The board had some protesters removed, adjourned the meeting several times and even tried to continue its business while the demonstrators tried to interrupt. The residents believe they didn’t get enough say in the locations chosen for two Philadelphia casinos. Both casinos are to be placed on the Delaware River waterfront, not far from homes. The casinos still need zoning changes […]

FEIST: 1,2,3,4

DELUCA: Of course, it’s Feist’s “low-fi”-ness, her “analog mind,” that makes her so appealing to ad men — not to mention music-programming coffee-shop baristas — who are looking for a chic, soulfully human sound.

TONIGHT: The Camden 28 On PBS

In the early-morning hours of Sunday, August 22, 1971, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and Attorney General John Mitchell announced that FBI agents had arrested 20 antiwar activists in and near a draft board office in Camden, New Jersey. Five days later, Mitchell made public the indictment of these individuals and included eight others who were linked to the break-in. The major charges against the group were conspiracy to remove and destroy files from the draft board, FBI office, and the Army Intelligence office; destruction of government property and interfering with the Selective Service system. If convicted, some of the indicted […]

FOUND: One Psycho Killer, Qu’est-ce Que C’est

William Enman, the admitted killer who walked away from a Camden County psychiatric hospital Sunday afternoon, was found today — on the grounds of the hospital. It was not immediately clear where Enman spent the past two days, but authorities said he left the Ancora Psychiatric Hospital in Winslow Township Sunday with a backpack full of “camping and survivalist equipment.” Police searched the area around the hospital extensively, using infrared devices and a state police helicopter. The search even extended to Canada, where authorities said Enman bought a piece of property in Nova Scotia. In the end, a New Jersey […]

NPR FOR THE DEAF: We Hear It Even When You Can’t

FRESH AIR We love low prices, sure, but we frown at the things companies do to get us good deals — like paying low wages. In his book Supercapitalism, economist Robert Reich looks at the divided mind of the consumer and citizen. Reich subtitles his book “The Transformation of Business, Democracy, and Everyday Life,” and in it he asks tough questions about American priorities: “Why has capitalism become so triumphant and democracy so enfeebled? Are these two trends connected? What, if anything, can be done to strengthen democracy?” Reich was secretary of labor in the Clinton administration and now teaches […]
