BY JANE L. DALTON CHANCELLOR OF THE PHILADELPHIA BAR ASSOCIATION Many firms with Philadelphia offices are in fact providing pro bono services to Guantanomo detainees, and to dozens of other clients whom the average person might find offensive. They are to be commended. Lawyers who practice in this country are obligated to be mindful of deficiencies in the administration of justice, and that the poor and the near-poor cannot afford adequate legal assistance. Therefore, all lawyers are asked to devote time and resources and use civic influence to ensure equal access to our system of justice for all those who, […]

HOT DOCUMENT: A Letter From Steve Jobs
BY STEVE JOBS SPECIAL TO PHAWKER* February 6, 2007 With the stunning global success of Apple’s iPod music player and iTunes online music store, some have called for Apple to “open” the digital rights management (DRM) system that Apple uses to protect its music against theft, so that music purchased from iTunes can be played on digital devices purchased from other companies, and protected music purchased from other online music stores can play on iPods. Let’s examine the current situation and how we got here, then look at three possible alternatives for the future. To begin, it is useful to […]

NBC 10: Authorities said on Tuesday they had seized 100 kilograms of cocaine, worth $10 million on the street. A confidential informant led city narcotics officers to a tractor trailer with Texas tags at approximately 7 a.m. They caught up with the tractor-trailer at a Kmart on Aramingo Avenue. Officers moved in, they opened up the tractor-trailer and found papayas and limes, but based on the intelligence they had gathered and the scent the K-9s picked up, officers kept digging through the trailer. “We get the papayas out, we open up the boxes and they’re right there and everybody just […]

GAYBO: My Bologna Has A First Name; Norwegian Woody’s; Paris Is Burning & We Don’t Need No Water
BY TOMMY ZANE Woody’s, the Judy Garland of of Philly cocktailing, has a new look, some new staff and new owners, so I finally dragged my ass over there to check out what all the bitching is about. The first floor looks the same, without some of the nasty bartenders I had grown to hate. So far, so good. The drink prices are up and the drinks are much weaker — thumbs down, new owner Michael Weiss. If there was one thing Bill Wood was known for in Philly, it was a strong drink. Even straight friends went there knowing […]

1.5 Million Women To Sue Pants Off Wal-Mart
SAN FRANCISCO Feb 6, 2007 (AP)? A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest private employer, must face a class-action lawsuit alleging as many as 1.5 million former and current female employees were discriminated against in pay and promotions. The ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upholds a 2004 federal judge’s decision to let the nation’s largest class-action employment discrimination lawsuit go to trial, possibly exposing the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailing powerhouse to billions of dollars in damages. “Plaintiff’s expert opinions, factual evidence, statistical evidence and anecdotal evidence present significant proof of a […]
