INQUIRER: The chief legislative aide to Philadelphia City Councilman W. Wilson Goode Jr. issued a “letter of apology” yesterday for flashing handwritten signs in City Council chambers comparing a Fox29 news reporter to the Ku Klux Klan. In the letter addressed to Goode, Latrice Bryant said: “I apologize for my public, albeit silent, display of the handwritten signs. What I did was inappropriate and inexcusable.” On Sept. 18, during a Council meeting, Bryant held up notebook paper with the messages “Fox29 are racist” and “Jeff Cole KKK.” Bryant and Goode are black and reporter Jeff Cole is white. As Fox29 […]

GAYDAR: Is That All There Is To An Apocalypse?
BY AARON STELLA Well, here we are again with another exciting edition of GAYDAR! This week, we’re traveling back in time to turn-of-the-century Alabama, the land of pork rinds, pickled pigs feet, deep-fried snickers and Creationism. Know that it wasn’t the simple fare or the relaxed colloquialisms, or even the Biblical science, that drew my family to the middle of nowhere. We were pilgrims, in the loosest sense of the word, in that we desired a new start, and a place where we could worship freely with fellow Catholics — oh yeah, and we were on the run from […]
MEDIA: A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: We sat down with the comedians for a provocative talk about the political landscape, the way they (and other, more traditional media outlets) cover it, and whether or not we’ll ever see the alleged ”change” we’ve been promised by every candidate. ”Do you mean change we need, or change we can believe in?” asks Stewart. ”Any change is as good as a vacation at this point,” says Colbert, who set his conservative TV pundit character aside for the chat. ”I don’t know if you’ve paid much attention to the past eight years, but it has been a shitburger […]
PIMPIN AINT EASY: Goode Thug Bitchslaps Reporter
PHILLY CLOUT: The Fox 29 News Vs. W. Wilson Goode Jr. mess appears to have turned physical today. Here is video from the Fox 29 News web site of reporter Claudia Gomez chasing Goode after his comments in Council today. A man wearing a fedora — no, really — appears to step in her way several times. Then we get this exchange: Gomez to man in hat: “You just slapped me!” Man in hat: “No I didn’t. I put my hand up and you ran into it.” MORE MYFOXPHILLY: Click To Watch Video PREVIOUSLY: Goode Aide Calls Fox29 ‘Racist’ For […]

JUST A JELLO SHOT AWAY FROM THE PRESIDENCY: Sarah Palin To Watch Friday’s Debate At The Irish Pub
MYFOX: Palin will be at the Irish Pub on Walnut Street on Friday night for a public debate watching party, if the debate between John McCain and Barack Obama continues as planned. DEVELOPING… CITIZEN MOM: So, you know how I hate to be a contrarian, but it’s worth disagreeing with Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, who last week told City Paper’s Tom Namako that the upcoming election is “not about Sarah Palin.” I know what Dean meant, of course — that Democrats have to focus on running against John McCain, not the Moose Shootin’ Mama. Except it looks like […]

PALIN Vs. COURIC: Deer Meets Headlights
Lord help us all. RELATED: Why Won’t John McCain Release His Medical Records?
PANIC: McCain ‘Suspends’ Campaign, Desperate To Stem Free Fall In The Polls, Getting Crushed By Econ.
POLITICO: McCain suspends his campaign, and asks to postpone Friday’s debate, to address the financial crisis. Both candidates have been marginal players; McCain, though, seems to have the potential to make himself a major one, and his move is a mark, most of all, that he doesn’t like the way this campaign is going. But in terms of the timing of this move: The only thing that’s changed in the last 48 hours is the public polling. MORE WASHINGTON POST: A new Washington Post-ABC News poll gives Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama a nine-point lead over Republican nominee John McCain. […]
MEDIA: Alycia Lane Sues Larry Mendte, KYW
ASSOCIATED PRESS: A fired Philadelphia newscaster has filed a lawsuit accusing her former co-anchor of invading her privacy and leaking personal information to the media. Alycia Lane’s lawsuit was filed Tuesday. Her former co-anchor, Larry Mendte, has pleaded guilty to illegally accessing Lane’s e-mail and is awaiting sentencing. He admitted reading thousands of Lane’s e-mails from 2006 to 2008. Lane’s lawsuit also names KYW-TV, the station that employed the two. She accuses the station of defaming her before and after she was fired after being arrested in December following a scuffle with New York police. Tuesday’s lawsuit expands on one […]
EARLY WORD: The Buena Obama Social Club
Michael T. Regan is, as you may well know, the City Paper’s staff photographer. He is also a friend of Phawker. Astute readers will recall his excellent Tom Waits photo essay (with wry commentary from local filmmaker Jon Michals) which ran here earlier this summer. On Sunday, he will be unveiling photos from a recent trip to the sultry, forbidden (for Americanos, anyway) land of Cuba. Michael tells us there will be food, music and it’s all for a good cause — kinda like Cuba, without the failed Marxism and odious totalitarianism: A portion of the proceeds will benefit Urban […]
NEWS CLUES: Like A Federal Bailout Of The Truth
NOBAMA: New Jersey Just Got Dumber TRENTON, N.J. – Residents in one New Jersey town are disturbed after receiving fliers over the weekend that question Barack Obama’s candidacy on racial grounds. Roxbury resident Elizabeth Corsetto says a flier was left in her driveway asking, “Do You Want A Black President?” and showing a doctored photo of Obama with a long beard and turban. Roxbury Police Chief Mark Noll says the fliers were left on various streets in the northwestern New Jersey township by a white supremacist group called the League of American Patriots. Noll says the incident is being investigated […]
