KYW Silences Dem Ad Critical Of ‘Grand Oil Party’

THE HILL: A Philadelphia news radio station has rejected a Democratic ad that features an impersonator of President Bush thanking GOP congressional candidates for supporting the “Big Oil” agenda. Philadelphia KYW-AM Vice President and General Manager David Yadgaroff said his station decided not to run the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) ad because it was worried its listeners would be misled. “As an all-news station, we were concerned that our listeners would have been misled by usage of an impersonator in the creative delivery,” Yadgaroff said in an e-mail sent to The Hill. The ad was part of a $100,000 […]

GAMBLOR: Guv To Ask Casinos To Move Off River

DAILY NEWS: Claiming that “the political landscape has changed” in the battle over casinos in Philadelphia, Gov. Rendell said yesterday that he will meet with operators of two proposed gaming houses about abandoning their Delaware River sites. Rendell spoke a day after two powerful Philadelphia legislators – State House Appropriations Committee chairman Dwight Evans and State Sen. Vince Fumo – threatened the operators with legislative recrimination if they didn’t agree to relocate the casinos. Rendell said in an interview that opposition to the sites by the lawmakers and by Mayor Nutter were reason enough for him to convene a meeting […]

(Details after the jump) WHAT’S GOIN’ ON: From the city to the Shore, weather could be a mixed bag on Saturday and Sunday. A chance of thunderstorms threatens to rain on Independence Day parades. Forecasters say it’s still too early to tell if fireworks might be washed out. Keep your fingers crossed. Watch out for traffic gridlock. The Benjamin Franklin Parkway is playing host to the region’s biggest events this weekend, so if you’re planning to be anywhere near the Art Museum and on four-wheels, make sure it’s a skateboard. NEWS CLUES: Like A Compassionate Release Of Truth

DN LOOKS INTO THE WRONGFUL LIFE & DEATH OF KENNETH KEITH Kallenbach, 39, a longtime member of Howard Stern’s “Wack Pack” who suffered from cystic fibrosis, was rapidly shedding weight while jailed on a parole violation. Even the Upper Chichester cop who arrested him in March for allegedly trying to lure a teenage girl into a car was shocked by his gaunt appearance at his preliminary hearing April 15. “He looked bad,” Officer Michael Smalarz recalled last week. “I said, ‘Kenny, man, you’re really losing weight.’ ” He was dying. But despite the mid-April request that Kallenbach be released — […]

Dear Faithful Friends and Customers, After eight years of slugging it out in the Italian Market, Molly’s Bookstore is closing its doors. A general shift in the bookselling industry and personal circumstances has simply made it inevitable. I can truly say that I spent my lifetime in the book business and can say, with some qualification, that I am a third generation bookseller. (My grandmother sold “girlie” magazines in the 60s and 70s.) The nature of the business has changed so much in the past few years. The reliance on Amazon to supplement sales made it much more of a […]

Madame Marie, Asbury Park Fortune Teller, Dead At 93

She became known worldwide from Bruce Springsteen’s homage to her in his music. “Did you hear the cops finally busted Madam Marie,” Springsteen sang in his 1973 song, “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” “for tellin’ […]

ARTSY: The Blizzard Of OZ

DAILY NEWS: COULD NORTH PHILLY be the homeland of OZ? Of course we’re not talking about the Wonderful Wizard from the movie classic. We’re talking about “OZ,” the prolific and pesky graffiti vandal who has scrawled his “tag” on structures all over Philadelphia for more than 20 years, costing the city thousands of dollars to clean up. So who is OZ — this person who prowls the city at night armed with an arsenal of aerosol cans? OZ, much like the movie character, might turn out to be just an ordinary man. Like, say, a 37-year-old who works at a […]
