Director Jim Jarmusch put the dead in deadpan. His films are elegantly cool pregnant pauses broken up with stillborn dialog and opening and closing credits scored with terminally hip soundtracks. His films wear sunglasses after dark, they smoke in places where no smoking is prohibited and they were cool before it was cool to be cool.
Heretofore, Jarmusch has filmed the best minds of his generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix, angel-headed hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night, who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat up smoking in the supernatural darkness of cold-water flats floating across the tops of cities contemplating jazz.
However, his new movie is a comedy about brain-eating zombies starring Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Steve Buscemi and Selena Gomez. So lighten up there, Maynard G. Krebs! It’s called The Dead Don’t Die and while it doesn’t come out until June 14th we have a pair of tickets to see an advance screening at the Riverview on Thursday night (May 30th) followed by a post-screening Q&A with the director.
