ARTSY: Nip & Tuck

Complete Prolapsus of the Uterus by Wangechi Mutu, 2004, Glitter, ink, collage on found medical illustration paper You may not have heard of Kenyan-born artist Wangechi Mutu, but you will soon. In the fistful of years since her graduation from Yale’s MFA program, her work has shocked, angered, disfigured, and been applauded by curators across the United States. Dr. Joe Gregory, chair of Drexel’s Department of Art and Art History, saw a piece of hers in the MoMA a few years ago. He was instantly taken with her work. Like so many gut-wrenching desires, Dr. Gregory’s went unrequited for years. […]

A FLAMING LIPS EXCLUSIVE: “The Perjinky Effect”

As a souvenir of our visit to Wayne Coyne’s house last week (more on that later), we filmed the Flaming Lips frontman narrating a new comic book he’s working on called The Perjinky Effect in his kitchen. Enjoy. RELATED: The Flaming Lips are going to be busy at this year’s South by Southwest Festival. On Wednesday, organizers behind the Austin, Texas event added even more films to the schedule, including Lips frontman Wayne Coyne’s “A Year in the Life of Wayne’s Phone.” The film, which Coyne directed, is made up of footage recorded solely on the singer’s iPhone, and is […]

EXCERPT: Phearless Phone Phreaks

WIRED: Before smartphones and iPads, before the internet or the personal computer, a misfit group of technophiles, blind teenagers, hippies, and outlaws figured out how to hack the world’s largest machine: the telephone system. The following is an excerpt from the new book Exploding the Phone written by Phil Lapsley and published by Grove/Atlantic, which tells the story of the “phone phreaks.” There it was again. Jake Locke set down his cup and looked more closely at the classified ad. It was early afternoon on a clear spring day in Cambridge in 1967. Locke, an undergrad at Harvard University, […]

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH: Colorado State Marijuana Task Force Recommends Legalizing ‘Pot Tourism’

DENVER POST: Members of a task force proposing regulations for recreational marijuana in Colorado approved recommendations Tuesday that would allow for marijuana tourism but block out-of-state pot shop owners. The Amendment 64 Implementation Task Force voted to allow people from outside of Colorado to shop in forthcoming retail marijuana stores, although the amount they could purchase at any one store would be limited. The goal is to prevent “smurfing,” which would occur when one person goes from store-to-store accumulating marijuana to then sell into the black market. The thinking is that lowering the amount of marijuana an out-of-stater could […]

CONCERT REVIEW: Jim James @ JB’s

Photo by PETE TROSHAK. Spiritual conversion can be kick-started by many things. A burning bush, a tab of acid, getting struck by lightning or falling off a stage while you are playing a rock concert and getting seriously injured. The latter happened to My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James back in 2008. While he was recovering from his injuries, a friend gave him a graphic novel made out of wood published back in 1929 that told the story of a man falling from grace and making a Faustian pact that enabled him to make great art at the price of […]

LOL: Russian Car Dashboard Crash Cam Compendium

As we all learned in the wake of last week’s meteorite apocaplypse, every Russian car is equipped with dashboard cams because accidents are so common — along with drunken road rage rumbles and insurance scammers that run into oncoming cars in the hopes of getting paid — and neither judges nor insurance companies will take anyone at their word without photographic proof. Here’s a must-see compendium of the every day insanity unleashed every day on Russian roads: Flipped cars, jack-knifed tractor trailers, T-boned trucks and highways buzzed by low-flying Russian MIGs. This is funnier than all three Jackasses combined in […]

The Belle & Sebastian To Rock Skyline Stage (Gently)

Belle & Sebastian will be playing the Mann’s Skyline Stage on July 10th. Anybody who was witness to the splendor in the grass that was Sigur Ros’ two-night stand at the Skyline Stage last summer can attest to just how splendid this will invariably be: Craft beers, food trucks, blanket-on-the-lawn, under the bushes under the stars. And no cops. Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 AM. So don’t just sit there with your teeth in your mouth. Fold your hands child, you walk like a peasant!
