Win Tix To See The Black Crowes @ The Mann

When the Black Crowes broke big in 1990, I wrote them off as derivative cock rockers. When Southern Harmony And Musical Companion came out in 1992, I realized I was wrong. Dead wrong. Take, for instance the song posted below, “Sometimes Salvation.” I dare you to find me a more soulful, primal and convincing rock n’ roll song about the pitiless intersections of love and addiction, transcendence and destruction. Don’t bother, you can’t. And yes, that’s Sophia Coppola as the druggy ingenue. Their trajectory since has zigged and zagged all over the place as they morphed from Rolling Stones via Bon Jovi into something much more interesting, beardy and stoned. Either unable or uninterested in seducing the mainstream in the way they did back in the day, or content to be exiles in Outer Jambandistan, the band has been given to extended hiatuses, four live albums, all-acoustic do-overs of their back catalog, and other forms of dont-give-a-fuckery. But Lordy, as a live band — hell hath no fury. Which is why you should burn some offerings to ye old rock gods that we have a pair of giveaway tickets to see the Crowes at the Mann on Sunday with the Tedeschi-Trucks Band.
