CHITWOOD: Lion Stamped Out Lesbian Crime Spree

INQUIRER: A pair of lesbian lovers have admitted to burglarizing 29 homes but passed up one house where they encountered a lion, police said. Harley Rose Gifford and Britney Singleton, both 19 and from the 7100 block of Marshall Road, in Upper Darby have been arrested, according to police who expect to charge them with the crimes when their initial investigation is completed. They are currently being held on unrelated charges, according to court documents. Police were continuing to check the home that reportedly held the lion. The owners are not home, Chitwood said. “If we find a lion it […]

FRINGE REVIEW: The Oresteia Project

BY BRANDON LAFVING The Oresteia is a triptych of plays — Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Furies — written by Aeschylus that the Philadelphia Artist’s Collective (PAC) has adapted and presented as part of the Fringe Festival. Adapted and directed by Philadelphia’s Brenna Geffers, The Oresteia Project modernizes the ancient Greek drama so that contemporary American ethos replaces the Ancient Greek perspective. The final scene is the quintessential example of this, when the implacable Athena, played by Dana Kreitz, prophetically reveals the gods’ judgment of humanity. Apparently, the gods decided to manipulate the Greeks and Trojans into a war, […]

SH*T MY UNCLE SAYS: Confusion Is Next

BY WILLIAM C. HENRY We are going to learn a great deal about ourselves as Americans, and as human beings, between now and November 7th, 2012. We’re going to find out what our REAL underlying values are; about our humanity, our ethics, our true morals. We’re going to expose our collective intelligence, our ability to reason, our ability to analyze, our ability to interpret. We’re most likely going to reveal whether, as a nation, we believe in basic science or the bible-tells-us-so. We’re most definitely going to learn a great deal about our capacity for tolerance, understanding and compassion; and […]

SUN AIRWAY: Wild Palms

Sun AirwayGet More: Sun Airway, MTV Hive Today MTV Hive premiered the new music video for the Sun Airway single “Wild Palms” by Klip Collective’s Ricardo Rivera. Recorded over the summer at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia, Rivera’s visual representation is about as accurate of a picture as you can get: while present, Barthmus remains somewhat of an incorporeal being, fading in and out of focus as his words superimpose over each other. Every movement appears slightly slowed and dreamy as “Wild Palms” seems to exist as a permanent part of the atmosphere — you could easily picture it […]

FRINGE REVIEW: Elephant Room

BY BRANDON LAFVING FRINGE CORRESPONDENT Elephant Room is a magic show, theatrical performance, and adlib comedy all in one that brings together three multi-talented magicians: Daryl Hannah (no, not that one), Dennis Diamond and Louie Magic.  Mr. Hannah, with a prophetic voice and purple coat, played the part of an acid-tripping shaman. His failed attempt to woo Anne White, one of Philadelphia’s prized ballerinas, was hilarious. He asked whether she had a boyfriend. Her response was, no, she didn’t, and as Hannah moved in a little closer, she averred, “I have a husband.” Sleight of hand, misdirection and other antique […]

SIDEWALKING: Life Goes On

Manhattan, 10:15 AM, September 11th, 2001 by Melanie Einzig  LUC SANTE: I can understand her decision not to publish it right away. It would have been attacked as being insufficiently attentive to the enormity of the day. It would have seemed irreverent. When something of that magnitude happens, everything seems to be in service of awe, shock, reverence – reaffirming basic values, casting out demons. Something that includes such a violent contradiction within its depiction of the event – it just feels wrong. People wouldn’t have been able to take it in right away. […] Minutes after that picture was […]

BOOK: Palin Boffed NBA Great Glen Rice?

NATIONAL ENQUIRER: Publishing sources familiar with the contents of author Joe McGinniss’ highly-anticipated book “The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin” have revealed shocking secrets that will impact her decision to enter the 2012 presidential race. In the book, which will be published on September 20th, McGinniss claims Sarah had a steamy interracial hookup with basketball stud GLEN RICE [pictured above, with wife Cristina Fernandez]  less than a year before she eloped with her husband Todd. Sarah hooked up with the NBA great, then a 6-foot-8 junior at the University of Michigan when he was playing in a college […]

PILEGGI: If You Can’t Get Enough Reactionary Pennsyltucky Crackers To The Polls To Cancel Out The Philadelphia Vote, Just Change The Rules

POST-GAZETTE: A new proposal is pushing the often-forgotten Electoral College into the spotlight as Pennsylvania officials ponder the state’s role in next year’s presidential race. Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi is trying to gather support to change the state’s “winner-takes-all” approach for awarding electoral votes. Instead, he’s suggesting that Pennsylvania dole them out based on which candidate wins each of the 18 congressional districts, with the final two going to the contender with the most votes statewide. So far, the idea has received support from colleagues of the Delaware County Republican in the state House and from Republican Gov. Tom […]

I WAS A TEENAGE SEX PISTOL: Q&A With Pistols Bassist & Principal Songwriter Glen Matlock

BY JONATHAN VALANIA Glen Matlock was the original bass player in the Sex Pistols, and he was also one the band’s principal songwriters — all the classic Pistols tunes (“Anarchy In The UK,” “God Save The Queen” “Pretty Vacant”) bear his imprimatur. So why haven’t you heard of him? Because he left the band — whether he quit or was fired depends on who you ask — just before the Pistols went supernova and was replaced by human car wreck Sid Vicious who’s onstage self-mutilation, epic dope appetite and ignominious demise (dead from a heroin overdose while being jailed for […]
