BY GREG ADOMAITIS Love him or hate, there is no denying that Glenn Beck is a rock star right now. Last night he maxed out the Barnes and Nobel in Cherry Hill, drawing a crowd of several hundred, for an hour-long book-signing to promote the release of Arguing With Idiots. Several hundred, awful truthers, teabaggers, conspiracy theorists and concerned citizens came out to meet a voice of their cause. “This doesn’t surprise me…because he knows what he’s talking about,” said Dave Williams from Marlton, gesturing to the 600-person line. Williams came with Beck’s book in hand. So did almost everyone else and most had at least two or three copies. Mary Jane Twaddell was pacing the length of the line selling 9/12 bumper stickers. “Two months ago I was sitting at the couch screaming at the television,” said Twaddell from Tabernacle, New Jersey. Two months later, she’s been to Washington for the 9/12 rallies and has been regularly attending teabagging meetings near her hometown that draw upwards of 80 people each week. So, she’s feeling much better now, thanks. “They call us mobs. We are not. We are your mother, your sister, your brother or aunt,” she said. When Beck arrived by tour bus and bullhorn in hand he apologized profusely for only having an hour to sign copies of his book and thanked everyone who had come out. “Wake up everyone you know!” he cried.
WHITE HOUSE BLOG: Last night Fox News continued its disregard for the facts in an attempt to smear the Administration’s efforts to win the Olympics for the United States. In the past, hosting the Olympics has been a source of pride and unity for the country, but once again Fox News’ Glenn Beck program has shown that nothing is worthy of respect if it can be used as part of a partisan attack to boost ratings.
RHETORIC: BECK SAID VANCOUVER LOST $1 BILLION WHEN IT “HAD THE OLYMPICS.” Glenn Beck said, “Vancouver lost, how much was it? they lost a billion dollars when they had the Olympics.” [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]
REALITY: VANCOUVER’S OLYMPICS WILL NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL 2010. Vancouver will host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games from February 12 – 28, 2010 and March 12-21, 2010, respectively. [Vancouver2010.com, accessed 9/29/09]
