HELLO CAMEL TOE: Maxim Taps Eagles Rookie
INQUIRER: What a whirlwind ride for Janelle Stangl. The topper is today, when the September issue of Maxim — the one with tennis’ Anna Kournikova on the cover — officially hits newsstands, and inside, there’s Stangl, touted as one of the NFL’s four “most gorgeous” cheerleaders. Not bad for an Eagles rookie. Less than four months ago, Stangl, 21, who hails from Bethlehem, Pa., was a junior studying dance at the University of Arts. Then she got picked to join the Eagles cheerleading squad…. Last week during practice, Stangl was surprised by who was texting — her mom. She’d found […]

RECONSIDER THIS: M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes”
[Photo by JONATHAN VALANIA] POP CESSPOOL: There she is at No. 5 on the Hot 100, riding the coattails of a stoner movie, and I’m mildly thrilled. Now, I’m no Official M.I.A. Booster; since she first bopped out of Diplo’s camp, I’ve been a casual consumer and a quiet skeptic. And other nerds already have found much to analyze in the rise of the weird, gunshotty “Paper Planes,” so I’m not claiming to be throwin’ any lightning bolts here. But I will say this: Part of me wants M.I.A.’s ditty to be another “Teen Spirit” moment — an instance when […]
BIGFOOT IN GEORGIA: Russkies Taking Sweet Ol’ Time
CBC: A withdrawal of Russian tanks and troops from the conflict zone in Georgia was underway Monday afternoon, according to Russia’s deputy chief of staff, though there were no immediate signs of the pullout. “Today, according to the peace plan, the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers and reinforcements has begun,” Col.-Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn said in a briefing in Moscow Monday. Russian troops have controlled a wide swath of Georgia for days, after fierce fighting broke out Aug. 7 in the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia. Under a European Union-brokered peace plan signed by both Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Georgian […]
FRANKFORD RAPIST: Two More Attacks Last Night
CBS 3: Philadelphia Police identified a person of interest in a series of sexual assaults in the Frankford section of the city. Authorities announced 26-year-old Dorrell Shaw is sought for questioning in connection with six similar attacks on women in the area. Police said Shaw is not currently linked to the attacks, but is wanted for a July 21 probation violation stemming from a burglary charge. Shaw previously lived in the area on the 5200 block of Marlow Street and is similar in description to a composite sketch recently released of a suspect in the Frankford attacks. Police are searching […]

SPORTO: Sixers Make Iggy The $80 Million Man
BLEACHER REPORT: You’ve got to love the superlatives analysts use to describe up and coming stars in sports. From “freakish ability” to “a great motor” to “outstanding length”, the words roll of the tongue beautifully. Andre Iguodala is a guy who fits all three of those characterizations. He plays with heart and is a one of the fastest players in the NBA, turning on the motor for many a fast-break dunk. His length allows him to soar above the rim and his freakish ability guides him all over the court, on defense and offense. This past season, Iguodala was a […]

ROCK THE CASBAH: Pakistan President Resigns; Threatened With Impeachment, Musharraf Don’t Like It
NEW YORK TIMES: ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Under pressure over impending impeachment charges, President Pervez Musharraf announced that he would resign Monday, ending nearly nine years as one of the United States’ most important allies in the campaign against terrorism. Speaking on television from his presidential office here at 1 p.m., Mr. Musharraf, dressed in a gray suit and tie, said that after consulting with his aides, “I have decided to resign today.” He said he was putting national interest above “personal bravado.” “Whether I win or lose the impeachment, the nation will lose,” he said, adding that he was not […]
