Ron Hansen has created worlds of sin in novels like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Desperadoes. His unsavory bandits have appeared on the silver screen and earned him critical acclaim. But priest and nuns have replaced outlaws in Hansen’s most recent endeavors: The novelist was ordained a Catholic deacon in 2007, and his writing reflects an increased devotion to the Catholic faith. His latest book, Exiles, tells the story of the sea tragedy that killed five German nuns and inspired Victorian poet and Jesuit priest Gerard Manley Hopkins to write the poem, The Wreck of the Deutschland.
We talk with DANIEL KAMMEN about why oil prices have risen dramatically and energy saving strategies to help us adapt. THIS AMERICAN LIFE
Stories of people struggling to follow the Ten Commandments from the book of Exodus.Sure, you know the big ones: don’t murder, steal…something about graven images? We help you with the others through stories and interviews, each dealing with a different commandment. Military chaplains discuss “Thou Shalt Not Kill.” Middle school students explain what they’ve been coveting. Plus, adultery, lying, and some of the newer, lesser-known ones. There’s the “Ten Commandments of Tractor Safety,” the “Ten Commandments of Paris Dining,” the “Miner’s Ten Commandments of 1853,” the “Ten Commandments of Umpiring,” and the “Ten Commandments for Math Teachers“—just to name a few.
Also, TAL producer Alex Blumberg talks to Lt. Col. Lyn Brown, a U.S. Army Reserve chaplain who served two tours in Iraq. Brown talks about what “thou shall not kill” means to soldiers on the battlefield. In the book of Matthew, Jesus says that looking lustfully at a woman is like committing adultery in your heart. Contributor David Dickerson was raised as an evangelical Christian, and for many years tried not to have a single lustful thought.
She & Him
David Dye hosts the duo with discussion of their debut called, Volume One. Since an initial collaboration on a single for The Go-Getter film soundtrack, M. Ward and actress Zooey Deschanel went on to record a full-length collection of her demos. Volume One seamlessly combines her syrupy-sweet voice with his simplistic yet stunning instrumentals. Through love-lost and love-found songs like World Café favorite, “Sentimental Heart,” She & Him capture sounds and rhythms from the best of America’s mid-century.
