BMW has built the first of their Hydrogen 7 cars for public use, and handed the first set of keys over to U.S. funny-man, Will Ferrell. 25 of the first 100 cars will be handed out to celebrities in order to promote their hydrogen cars in a predictable PR stunt that we just walked straight into. Another 25 will be used for evaluation purposes and testing. Other lucky celebrities include Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Liguori, Richard Gere, Sharon Stone and An Inconvenient Truth producer, Davis Guggenheim, as well as more unusual names like German Federal Minister […]
MINE OWNER: “These Miners May Not Be Found”
HUNTINGTON — After a camera lowered through a fourth bore hole again showed no signs of six workers trapped in the Crandall Canyon mine, officials on Sunday acknowledged what many had already feared. “It’s likely that these miners may not be found,” Rob Moore, vice president of mine owner Utah Energy Corp., said during a Sunday afternoon news conference. Video from the latest bore hole drilled from the top of the mine into caverns below showed extensive damage to that area of the mine, and oxygen levels measured at 7 or 8 percent — not enough to support life. Work […]
EDITORIAL: Union-Busting Is Killing Miners
BY ANDY STERN/ PRESIDENT SERVICE EMPLOYEE INTERNATIONAL UNION As I write I’m thinking about the mine workers’ union members I used to know when I worked in Pennsylvania in the 1970s. Back then, most of the coal industry was unionized, and bright young miners like Cecil Roberts, who is now the United Mine Workers president, got together to make their union stronger and more effective. When they couldn’t get the coal companies to protect their lives on the job, the miners went out on several long national strikes to win, among other things, expanded safety rights. They had safety committees […]

THE TAO OF EVA: Breakfast Of Champions
BY EVA LIAO BEIJING — I’ll admit it: In times of desperate measure, somewhere between Last Call and beddy bye, I’ve patronised some of the many Chinese fast food joints Philly has to offer. Places with names like Mr. Chow, Mr. Wong and David’s Mai Lai Wah taste best right around 3 A.M. And that’s all well and good, as long as nobody is laboring under the delusion that this is what Chinese food really tastes like — because, almost without exception, Chinese food in America is about as ‘real’ as the tits hanging on Anna Nicole, RIP. Truth is, […]

TODAY I SAW…
BY JEFF DEENEY “Today I saw…” is a series of nonfiction shorts based on my experiences as a caseworker serving formerly homeless families now living in North and West Philadelphia. I decided not long after starting the job that I was seeing so many fascinating and disturbing things in the city’s poorest neighborhoods that I needed to start cataloging them. I hope this bi-weekly column serves as a record of a side of the city that many Philadelphians don’t come in contact with on a daily basis. I want to capture moments not frequently covered by the local media, which […]
SHOWDOWN: The People vs. Vincent Fumo
BY DAVE DAVIES/DAILY NEWS It’s official: State Sen. Vince Fumo won’t get a pass next year. Anti-casino community activist Anne Dicker has posted a Web site announcing plans to run against Fumo next April, promising a “break from the old idea of self service over public service.” Fumo is scheduled to stand trial in February on a 139-count federal corruption indictment. “It’s absolutely ridiculous Vince Fumo is still in office — he should resign,” Dicker said in a telephone interview yesterday. “I’ll let a jury decide his guilt or innocence, but his actions have brought a great deal of shame […]
GAMBLOR: Ex-Flyer Turned Bookie Sentenced
As expected, former Philadelphia Flyers hockey player Rick Tocchet was sentenced Friday to two years’ probation for his involvement in an illegal gambling operation. Tocchet, 43, who now lives in Phoenix, Ariz., pleaded guilty three months ago to counts of promoting gambling and conspiracy (see related story). Tocchet is on an indefinite leave from his position as assistant coach of the Phoenix Coyotes. Tocchet admitted he was part of an illegal sports betting ring between September 2002 and February 2006. The ring, based in the South Jersey and Philadelphia areas, took in millions of dollars in bets from all over […]
INCONVENIENT TRUTH: CIA & FBI Whitewashed Wikipedia Entries On Iraq War & Guantanamo Bay
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – People using CIA and FBI computers have edited entries in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia on topics including the Iraq war and the Guantanamo prison, according to a new tracing program. The program, WikiScanner, was developed by Virgil Griffith of the Santa FeĀ Institute in New Mexico and posted this month on a Web site that was quickly overwhelmed with searches. The program allows users to track the source of computers used to make changes to the popular Internet encyclopedia where anyone can submit and edit entries. Griffith said he developed WikiScanner “to create minor public relations disasters for […]

VERSION 2.0: Utah Cave-In Kills 3 Rescuers, Injures 6
The problem-plagued effort to rescue six miners trapped in a Utah coal mine suffered its most grave setback Thursday night, when a seismic shudder sent rock tumbling onto rescue workers, killing three and injuring six, authorities said. The mountain “bump” occurred about 6:30 p.m., as the group of more than 100 rescue workers continued to carefully tunnel through the collapsed Crandall Canyon Mine. Since Aug. 6, when a predawn cave-in buried the miners, regular seismic tremors have slowed the dig to a virtual crawl. There has been no indication of whether the trapped miners are alive, and officials emphasized that […]

The troubled singer — who was rushed to hospital last week after allegedly overdosing on a cocktail of ecstasy, cocaine, ketamine and alcohol — poured her heart out to Blake Fielder-Civil’s mother Georgette during a family crisis meeting called by Amy’s father Mitch at Hampshire’s Four Season Hotel last Friday (10.08.07).
