All The Havoc The Bush Presidency Hath Wreaked Upon This Nation — 9/11, Katrina, Iraq — Pales In Comparison To His Appointment Of Justice Roberts

THE ATLANTIC: Congress, Roberts repeated, cannot seek to “‘level the playing field,’ or to ‘level electoral opportunities,’ or to ‘equaliz[e] the financial resources of candidates.’” Thus its only legitimate reason for regulating campaign finance is “preventing corruption or the appearance of corruption.” “Corruption,” however, is defined only a bargain like, “I will give you $200,000 to vote for my subsidy.” Roberts does not deny that the objects of McCutcheon’s bounty are likely to feel grateful to him, and to desire to please him while in office. However, as the majority originally explained in Citizens United, the mere fact […]

SH*T MY UNCLE SAYS: Democracy, Just Do it!

BY WILLIAM C. HENRY The next time you hear pissing and moaning — from your mouth or others’ — about the plutocratic state of U.S. politics, you might want to ask the bellyacher(s) about their voting record. If the answer turns out to be “seldom or never cast ballots,” you have just spotlighted the person(s) responsible for drowning the American dream. And just to be certain there’s no confusion: I’m not just saying they’re PART of the problem; I’m saying that each and every one of them ARE the problem! Statistics show that if Liberals/Progressives lose a preponderance of elections […]

NPR 4 THE DEAF: We Hear It Even When You Can’t

FRESH AIR “The stock market is rigged,” Michael Lewis tells Fresh Air’s Terry Gross. “It’s rigged for the benefit for really a handful of insiders. It’s rigged to … maximize the take of Wall Street, of banks, the exchanges and the high-frequency traders at the expense of ordinary investors.” Lewis is the author of several books about the world of finance, including Liar’s Poker and The Big Short. His new book Flash Boys is about the form of computerized transactions known as high-frequency trading, in which the fastest computers with the highest connection speeds get the information first, and make […]

What Is The Difference Between This And Murder?

Nothing. HUFFINGTON POST: A homeless New Mexico man who was illegally camping in the Albuquerque foothills was fatally shot by police. New helmet camera video released by the Albuquerque Police Department on Friday shows the moment 38-year-old James Boyd turns his back to officers and then gets shot dead. Despite overwhelming criticism to the shooting, the department says its officers were justified, KRQE reported. Boyd was shot on Sunday, March 16. Police Chief Gorden Eden said officers approached Boyd, who was sleeping, to speak to him about illegally camping in an open space, according to the Albuquerque Journal. According to […]

EARLY WORD: Let’s Get Lost

[wpvideo ptAfeSIt]   Bobby Bare, Jr. could’ve phoned in a career. He could’ve exploited the fact that he’s the son of iconic Country Music Hall of Famer Bobby Bare, was born into Nashville’s Music Row elite, and counted artists like Shel Silverstein as close family friends and George Jones and Tammy Wynette as next door neighbors. Instead, Bobby blazed a path of unique songwriting craftsmanship with a voice that blows through you like a cutting wind on the desolate prairie. Undefeated, due out April 15th on Bloodshot Records, is BBJ’s first release since 2010 and what he calls his “break-up […]

EXCERPT: Back In Black

MAGNET: Both Romy and Oliver were given to dressing head to toe in black and there was an unspoken agreement that this would become their look. “I hate to think of it as a uniform, you know? But my teenage years was literally like a descent into the dark clothes,” says Oliver. “I don’t know anything different, to be honest. A lot of my family wear all black and I always thought it was quite chic, I suppose.” “We never had that sort of, ‘by the way, everyone wear black’ moment, I never said ‘Oliver, you can’t wear that […]

CINEMA: Enemy Of The State

ENEMY (2013, directed by Denis Villeneuve, 90 minutes, Canada) NYMPHOMANIAC: VOLUME ONE (2013, directed by Lars Von Trier, 118 minutes, Denmark) THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (2014, directed by Wes Anderson, 99 minutes) BY DAN BUSKIRK FILM CRITIC Denis Villeneuve’s new thriller Enemy is an irritating new film, which is both a function and a fault of its design. Shot in a urine-hued filter and played with a humorless hush, Enemy is meant to get under your skin. I don’t mind a film getting under my skin as long as it knows what it is doing under there. Director Villeneuve […]

JOKERMAN: Q&A With Comedian Rob Delaney

BY JONATHAN VALANIA “I first got drunk at age twelve,” comedian Rob Delaney wrote in a piece for the November 2013 issue of Esquire. “Someone finally put me to bed when I was deemed too fucked up to hang out anymore. I’m aware now that it was an empirically terrible night, but the feeling alcohol gave me was so magical that it outweighed the night’s lousier aspects and I really looked forward to doing it again; I wanted that shit in me. As a lot of drunks report, introducing alcohol into my body just felt like ‘Ooh, there we […]
