NEW YORK TIMES: Tom Brookshier, a star defensive back who helped lead the Philadelphia Eagles to the 1960 National Football League championship and later teamed with Pat Summerall as CBS’s No. 1 professional football broadcasting duo, died Friday at a hospital in the Philadelphia suburb of Wynnewood, Pa. Brookshier, who lived in West Conshohocken, Pa., was 78. The cause was cancer, said his wife, Barbara. When Brookshier, a native of Roswell, N.M., joined the Eagles in 1953 out of the University of Colorado, he was a 10th-round draft pick. Figuring he was likely to be cut, he decided to make […]

DEENEY: DHS’s Trail Of Tears
BY JEFF DEENEY The most recent assault on institutional incompetence at DHS by the press comes this time from the Daily News in the form of a case study of sexual abuse against children placed into foster care by the agency. This information shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone familiar with how DHS resorted to removing children from homes en masse after scandal broke in 2007 about social workers, supervisors and even directors asleep at the wheel while children died on the agency’s watch. In a previous editorial I argued that increasing removals was an extremely unwise approach to […]
OLD CITY SHOOTER: The Defendent Is Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty In The Court Of Facebook
INQUIRER: Friends of Gerald Ung, the Temple University law student charged with shooting a Villanova University graduate six times in Old City last weekend, said yesterday that he is friendly, smart, and the opposite of a troublemaker. “Gerald is not a gun-happy, overstressed law student waiting to go postal,” one friend, Ernest Apaga, said in an e-mail. “He is extraordinarily gregarious and dynamic, and there is no doubt in my mind that his friends and professors at Temple are scurrying to figure out how to get him the proper legal counseling and funding he’ll need.” The man who was shot, […]

SEPTAGIRL: From The Dept. Of Civil Affairs
BY PHILLY GRRL Wednesday morning. I stand in front of the Arch Methodist Church on Broad and Arch and wait in vain for the Temple shuttle bus to appear. It does not. So when the C bus rolls to a stop, I hesitate a moment, then join the throng of passengers boarding. I’m not sure if I have a token or even enough change to pay the fare, but it is cold outside and the bus driver has sympathetic eyes so I hurry in before she closes the door. There are a few empty seats towards the front, generally saved […]

New York Times Editorial Questions Penn Study Questioning The Effectiveness Of Anti-Depressants
NEW YORK TIMES: Last week, The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study questioning the effectiveness of antidepressant drugs. The drugs are useful in cases of severe depression, it said. But for most patients, those with mild to moderate cases, the most commonly used antidepressants are generally no better than a placebo. […] And the real test of an antidepressant is not just whether it can lift someone out of depression; it is whether it can keep depression from returning. For a vast majority of people with depression, the illness is chronic. Relapses and low-level symptoms between episodes […]
CELEBUTARD: Cybil Shepherd’s Son Arrested For Robbing Fellow Passengers On Flight To Philly
STAR: Cybill Shepherd’s son [pictured above in his mother’s arms, circa 1987] was grounded at Philadelphia International Airport Tuesday after being accused of stealing from the carry-on bags of his fellow passengers. Cyrus “Zack” Shepherd-Oppenheim – the 22-year-old son of the Moonlighting star – rifled through the luggage of two sleeping travelers during a flight from San Francisco to Philadelphia on Monday night, two witnesses told authorities. In one case, he allegedly stole a Canon from a woman and dumped the rest of her things – including a makeup bag – in the trash can of a plane bathroom. From […]
