PHILADELPHIA, November 14, 2006 — The Pabst Blue Ribbon Philadelphia Rock Paper Scissors City League Championship Series is pleased to announce that Philadelphia player and resident Tom Smith (who competes under the name Vertical Paper, pictured in action, right) has brought the bronze medal back to Philadelphia from the 2006 RPS International World Championships, which took place in Toronto this past weekend. Vertical Paper outplayed over 500 competitors on his way to laying claim to being the 3rd best RPS player in the World. Vertical Paper competes as part of the Majestic 12, one of the largest and most feared RPS teams in the city.
Vertical Paper, who will head to Japan for five months in January to begin intensive training for next year’s Championships, becomes one of only five Americans to ever place in the top 3 during the five-year history of an event typically dominated by Canadians. When asked why Americans are starting to become more of a factor, the bronze medalist replied: “I think that Americans are just now beginning to have the facilities to fully train for the Championship event. With new World RPS Society sanctioned leagues and events serving as a training ground throughout the US, it’s giving us the facilities we need to climb to new heights in this sport. It appears that the Canadian stranglehold on the World Championships is finally a thing of the past, as none even placed in the top 3. Thank goodness.”
