2016 BETTER PHILADELPHIA CHALLENGE: Kevin And Michael Bacon Want To Give You $5,000

ABOUT THE BETTER PHILADELPHIA CHALLENGE
Founded in 2006 in memory of Philadelphia’s iconic 20th century city planner, Ed Bacon [1910-2005], this annual international competition challenges university-level students from around the world to address real-world urban design issues in Philadelphia that have application not only to our city, but to urban centers around the globe.

ABOUT THE 2016 CHALLENGE
The Mantua/Belmont section of Philadelphia was chosen as one of President Obama’s first “Promise Zones” for economic development – one of only five in the country. This neighborhood is bordered by some of Philadelphia’s largest institutions (the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, the Philadelphia Zoo, and Fairmount Park), as well as by large industrial sites (most notably the AMTRAK rail yards). YOUR CHALLENGE: As part of this neighborhood’s development, what physical design interventions could encourage healthy and active lifestyles, thereby improving public health among residents?

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Registration is FREE – a per-entry fee is charged at the time of submission ($25 student entry | $50 professional entry).

Register HERE to receive competition updates as they become available. Anyone may register, not only those planning to submit entries (teachers, administrators, etc. are welcome to register)! Multiple people from each team may register independently. You are not required to organize or tell us about any teams you organize until you submit your entry online in late October, at which time we will ask you to share information about all of your final team members. The most successful entries tend to come from teams which include students from a range of majors, including architecture, urban planning, design, landscape architecture, business, political science, and others. New for 2016 – the competition will be open to professionals and recent graduates (design or other), too! *

* In celebration of our 10th anniversary we are doubling the size of the competition by opening it up to professionals and recent graduates for the first time. Twice the entrants, twice the prizes! College student and professional/recent graduate entries will be judged separately, with a $5,000 First Prize for each. Organize a team today! MORE
