NSA WHISTLEBLOWN: America Just Swallowed The Red Pill, About To Learn How Deep The Rabbit Hole Goes

THE GUARDIAN: The individual responsible for one of the most significant leaks in US political history is Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old former technical assistant for the CIA and current employee of the defence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. Snowden has been working at the National Security Agency for the last four years as an employee of various outside contractors, including Booz Allen and Dell. From the moment he decided to disclose numerous top-secret documents to the public, he was determined not to opt for the protection […]

CINEMA: A History Of Violence

THE PURGE (2013, directed by James DeMonaco, 85 minutes, U.S.) BY DAN BUSKIRK FILM CRITIC You have to admire a sharp little thriller that really puts an audience through its paces as effectively as the new Michael Bay-produced thriller The Purge does.  Clocking in at a no-nonsense 85 minutes, the film doesn’t waste a lot of time establishing logic but nonetheless it had the audience screaming and cheering Thursday night at its first official screenings.  A deceptively intimate affair, this brutal little satire peeks at the bigger issue of a world driven mad by cathartic violence but focuses mainly on one man’s […]

1984 ALREADY HAPPENED: NSA Hoovering Up Massive User Data From The Nine Largest Internet Companies

WASHINGTON POST: The National Security Agency and the FBI are tapping directly into the central servers of nine leading U.S. Internet companies, extracting audio and video chats, photographs, e-mails, documents, and connection logs that enable analysts to track one target or trace a whole network of associates, according to a top-secret document obtained by The Washington Post. The program, code-named PRISM, has not been made public until now. It may be the first of its kind. The NSA prides itself on stealing secrets and breaking codes, and it is accustomed to corporate partnerships that help it divert data traffic or […]

WORTH REPEATING: I Stole David Bowie’s Hubcaps

VICE: Anyway, Bowie finally came out of the backroom surrounded by his minions, who seemed to have doubled in size behind the closed door. As he was bidding Andy a fond farewell, I slipped over to him and said, “Mr. Bowie, I was wondering if you’d be willing to do an interview for PUNK…” Without speaking, Bowie grabbed the Suicide record out of my hands and his entourage swept him down the hall, into the elevator, and outside to a waiting limo, which presumably swept him off to the next fabulous event. I didn’t even have time to say, […]

1984 HAS ALREADY HAPPENED: The NSA Is Collecting The Phone Records Of MILLIONS Of Americans

THE GUARDIAN: The National Security Agency is currently collecting the telephone records of millions of US customers of Verizon, one of America’s largest telecoms providers, under a top secret court order issued in April. The order, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, requires Verizon on an “ongoing, daily basis” to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries. The document shows for the first time that under the Obama administration the communication records of millions of US citizens are being collected […]

REPORT: War On Pot Is More Racist Than The KKK

USA TODAY: Black people are arrested for possessing marijuana at a higher rate than white people, even though marijuana use by both races is about the same, the American Civil Liberties Union reports in a new study. The analysis of federal crime data, released Tuesday, found marijuana arrest rates for blacks were 3.73 times greater than those for whites nationally in 2010. In some counties, the arrest rate was 10 to 30 times greater for blacks. An overall increase in marijuana possession arrests from 2001 to 2010 is largely attributable to drastic increases in arrests of black people, the […]
