Tell Harry Reid: No Immunity for Lawbreaking Companies
The Senate is considering a bill that would grant immunity to any telecom company that assisted in the administration’s illegal wiretapping. Chris Dodd promised to put a hold on any such bill, and Joe Biden and Barack Obama pledged to uphold it. We believe that any bill coming before the Senate that includes provisions for so-called ‘amnesty’ for large companies involved in illegally spying on Americans should be opposed, and have authored a letter to this effect addressed to Majority Leader Reid. You can co-sign it below. The letter will also be sent to Senate Democratic leadership and the Senate Judiciary Committee members. You can read the full text of the letter here.

WIRED: 860,000 Names On Terror Watch List, Including Many American Citizens
BY RYAN SINGEL The nation’s centralized watch list has grown to include 755,000 names suspected of having terrorist ties, resulting in nearly 20,000 positive matches of persons against the list in 2006, according to a new report from Congress’s investigative reporting arm. Since the list is now used in nearly all routine police stops and for domestic airline travel, Americans made up the bulk of those matches.
The Government Accountability Office’s report was presented in a hearing to the Senate’s Homeland Security Committee Wednesday, causing senators to express concern about the size and effectiveness of the list.
The GAO report (full pdf, html summary) included a few new details about the list’s size and operation but much of this was reported by Wired months ago. MORE
