The Queen is nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. The director is Stephen Frears, who previously gave us My Beautiful Laundrette, High Fidelity and Dirty, Pretty Things, among other films. PLUS DAVID EDELSTEIN on Oscar contenders in the two categories devoted to short films — animated and live-action — and include a new take on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl, an alien abductor in training (Lifted), a brief musical comedy set among falafel stands (West Bank Story) and the story of a door-to-door Mormon evangelist in love with a married woman.
THE WORLD CAFE
Beck joins host David Dye on the World Cafe to play tunes from The Information, his latest batch of unpredictable concoctions. Since his debut in 1993, Beck has surprised audiences with sardonic lyrics and vibrant genre-blending. With the help of Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, the new album boasts a funky, hip hop-inspired reworking of Beck’s early sound.
