LOS ANGELES TIMES: The really, really ridiculously good-looking days of Derek Zoolander are over — at least that’s what the “Zoolander 2” trailer would have us believe. The washed-up male supermodel played by Ben Stiller and his rival-turned-pal Hansel, played by Owen Wilson, returned to the runway on Paramount’s new trailer for the follow-up to the 2001 screwball comedy. Stiller and Wilson confirmed the start of “Zoolander 2” when they hijacked the Valentino runway in character at Paris Fashion Week in March and have dropped a few teasers since, and with the plot being revealed in the trailer the men attempt to reinstate their relevance in high fashion and pop culture. Fourteen years after the original, which is eons in fashion and film years, the catwalk comrades have been dubbed “Old” and “Lame” — pronounced with emphasis on the “e” as Zoolander would have it — coming up against the likes of All, the androgynous supermodel du jour, played by a wig-and-fur-wearing Benedict Cumberbatch. Their last-season status aside, Zoolander and Hansel are enlisted by an Interpol agent (Penelope Cruz), who’s hot, so Hansel immediately trusts her, to help solve the murders of the world’s most beautiful people, including Demi Lovato, Usher, Justin Bieber, Lenny Kravitz and Miley Cyrus, all of whom died with Zoolander’s signature look on their faces — Blue Steel. Bieber even snaps a Blue Steel selfie as he’s gunned down, because why not? The leading men infiltrate the world of high fashion and encounter an incomprehensible fashionista (Kristen Wiig), try to recover Zoolander’s Chinese throwing star-halting expression Magnum and uncover that criminal mastermind Mugatu (Will Ferrell) might be behind the slayings.
