BREAKING: Missing Pilot Who Faked Death Found

pilot_1.jpgCNN: Marcus Schrenker, the financial manager who officials say faked his own death in a plane crash after scamming his customers, has been found after an apparent suicide attempt, Florida and federal authorities said Tuesday. Schrenker was found at a campsite near Quincy, Florida, with “deep cuts on his wrists,” according to a statement by a Florida-based U.S. Marshals Service task force. Schrenker was bleeding profusely when about 20 officers approached his tent, said Deputy U.S. Marshal John Beeman.

baroqueobama_1.jpgSAM STEIN: Barack Obama took the next big step in his Republican charm offensive on Tuesday night, when he dined with several of the nation’s most prominent conservative pundits. The president-elect arrived at the Chevy Chase, Md., home of syndicated columnist George Will shortly after 6:30 p.m., according to a press pool report. Greeting him at the residence were other luminaries of the conservative commentariat, including the Weekly Standard’s William Kristol, New York Times columnist David Brooks, and Charles Krauthammer of the Washington Post. JACOB HEILBRUNN: Everyone should calm down. Barack Obama’s dinner with George F. Will, William Kristol, David Brooks, and Charles Krauthammer doesn’t mean that he’s selling out to the right. Quite the contrary. It indicates that Obama is completing the job of detaching the conservative intellectual elite from the GOP itself. Kristol, Brooks, and Krauthammer are all neoconservatives. Krauthammer was a speechwriter for vice-president Walter Mondale during the Carter administration. He moved right. Brooks has been making conciliatory noises about Obama for much of the past year, and barely qualifies as a conservative any longer. George F. Will, a traditional conservative, has been denouncing George W. Bush for years. Talking with them is a shrewd move on Obama’s part. It wouldn’t even be surprising if some neocons (re)defect to the Democratic party. MORE
