WHY WE LIKE MIKE: He ‘Gets’ The Wire

the_wire_-_season_5.jpgPHILLY CLOUT: Mayor Nutter is such a huge fan of the gritty HBO drama, The Wire, that he has organized a special City Hall screening of the series finale Sunday night. Wendell Pierce, the actor who portrays affable Detective Bunk Moreland, is scheduled to attend. Nutter hopes other actors from the show will sign on also. City Representative Melanie Johnson said that after the 8 p.m. screening in the Mayor’s Reception Room, Nutter will host a question and answer session with the actors. Johnson said the roughly 100 tickets for the screening would be evenly divided between invited guests and the general public. She said the city hopes to do a ticket raffle through the Philadelphia Daily News, the Inquirer, Al Dia and the Philadelphia Tribune. MORE

RELATED: In a resounding victory for the prosecution, Alton “Ace Capone” Coles was convicted this afternoon of using a Southwest Philadelphia-based record company he founded as a front for a multi-million crack and cocaine distribution network. Coles, 34, was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and with heading a continuing criminal enterprise that engaged in drug trafficking, conspiracy, wire fraud, money laundering and weapons offenses. He faces a possible life sentence.
